If your idea of a good weekend involves muddy trails, remote campsites, mountain roads, or simply getting away from the pavement, this list is for you. It's U.S. News' inaugural 2026 Best Adventure Vehicles awards. The rankings include vehicles that excel in two areas that continue to grow in popularity among American buyers: casual off-roading and camping.
According to U.S. News, the winners were selected based on a combination of overall vehicle rankings, capability, utility, cargo space, technology, safety features, and features that enhance outdoor recreation. The publication broke the awards into four major categories. We focus on two of them here: Best Vehicles for Off-Roading and Best Vehicles for Camping. Ford, Toyota, Hyundai, GMC, and Jeep were among the biggest winners in the Off-Roading and Camping categories.
For off-road enthusiasts, traditional body-on-frame SUVs and pickups dominated the rankings. The 2026 Ford Bronco was named Best Midsize SUV for Off-Roading, while the iconic 2026 Jeep Wrangler took top honors among compact SUVs. The 2026 Nissan Armada PRO-4X captured the large SUV category, proving that full-size SUVs can still be highly capable when the pavement ends.
Toyota scored two off-road victories. The 2026 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro was named Best Midsize Pickup for Off-Roading, while the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Woodland earned recognition as the Best Hybrid SUV for Off-Roading.
Ford also claimed wins with the Bronco Sport Sasquatch as Best Subcompact SUV for Off-Roading and the F-150 as Best Full-Size Pickup for Off-Roading.
Electric vehicles weren't left out either. The 2026 Rivian R1T was named Best Electric Pickup for Off-Roading, continuing Rivian's reputation as one of the most adventure-focused EV manufacturers on the market.
Camping-focused awards leaned heavily toward vehicles that offer interior space, cargo flexibility, fuel efficiency, and family-friendly features.
The 2026 Ford Bronco Sport earned another trophy, winning Best Subcompact SUV for Camping. Subaru's new 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid was named Best Subcompact Hybrid SUV for Camping.
Hyundai had a particularly strong showing. The 2026 Hyundai Tucson won Best Compact SUV for Camping, while the Tucson Hybrid claimed the Best Compact Hybrid SUV for Camping award. Hyundai also captured the Best Electric SUV for Camping category with the all-new 2026 Ioniq 9.
Toyota continued its winning streak with the 2026 RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid earning Best Compact Plug-In Hybrid SUV for Camping. The 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid was named Best Midsize Hybrid SUV for Camping.
GMC took home two camping awards. The 2026 GMC Acadia won Best Midsize SUV for Camping, while the long-wheelbase 2026 GMC Yukon XL earned Best Large SUV for Camping.
Mazda's 2026 CX-90 PHEV was recognized as the Best Midsize Plug-In Hybrid SUV for Camping.
Minivan buyers weren't forgotten. The 2026 Kia Carnival was named Best Minivan for Camping, thanks to its roomy interior, flexible seating arrangements, and family-friendly practicality.
