The automotive landscape has changed a lot over the past decade or so. Sedans and other cars accounted for over 50% of total sales in the U.S. in 2010. Today, that number is about 25%. Pickups and SUVs account for 75% of the sales of all vehicles in America today.
SUVs continue to gain momentum, and mid-sized SUVs are a huge part of this. They offer more room than the small SUVs, generally ride better, and often offer more amenities than the small ones. Some people don’t need to go all the way to full-sized SUVs, so the mid-sized segment is a perfect fit.
Of the top 20 best-selling mid-sized SUVs sold last year, only 6 saw sales declines. A big surprise for me was the Jeep Grand Cherokee ended up at the top of the list, handily outselling Explorer and Highlander. I don’t recall this ever happening before.
