All-New 2026 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4X4 Hybrid Review

Written By: Jerry Reynolds | Mar 9, 2026 12:29:43 PM

If you do what I do long enough, you learn to recognize a new vehicle that is going to be a game-changer for a car company. I believe I have one of those this week in the all-new, not refreshed, all-new 2026 Jeep Cherokee. This is a ground-up redesign with new architecture, new powertrains, and a noticeably more substantial footprint. We last saw the Cherokee for the 2023 model year, and it sat out the 2024 and 2025 model years, but it is back! Forget whatever you knew about the last generation of the Cherokee, only the Jeep emblems and the name is the same. Most exciting is there is now a hybrid option which I have been very eager to review, and luckily that is what I have for you today.

The 2026 Cherokee rides on Stellantis’ STLA Large architecture, engineered from the outset to support internal combustion, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and full battery electric configurations. That’s a major shift from the outgoing KL platform, which was never originally designed around electrification. For the hybrid model, that means better battery packaging, improved structural rigidity, and no major compromises in cargo or rear-seat space — something older hybrid adaptations often struggled with.

Performance

Since the hybrid system is what I am most excited about, let’s go under the hood of this new Cherokee where you find a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and a high-voltage battery pack, working together through an electrified automatic transmission. The turbocharged gasoline engine provides primary propulsion under sustained acceleration and highway cruising, while the electric motor supplements torque at low speeds and during throttle tip-in, reducing turbo lag and improving responsiveness. The hybrid system captures energy through regenerative braking to recharge the battery, allowing the SUV to operate in electric assist mode during light acceleration and low-speed driving. The combination delivers improved fuel efficiency over a conventional gasoline setup while maintaining the torque delivery expected in a Jeep 4x4 application. Power is distributed through Jeep’s active four-wheel-drive system, integrating the hybrid’s electric torque with mechanical traction management for enhanced grip in varying road conditions.

The end result of this powertrain setup is 3,500 pounds of towing capacity, and a range of over 500 miles when you fill the 13.8 gallon gas tank. Stated fuel economy is 39 city, 35 highway, and a combined rating of 37. Indications so far is it is doing at least that well on fuel economy. Best of all, acceleration is exceptional and it is also good when traveling at highway speeds. You would think there was a six cylinder under the hood the way it performs.

Exterior

The exterior sports a more mature, squared-off look than the last generation, returning to Jeep’s traditional design language with a prominent seven-slot grille flanked by slim LED headlamps and LED daytime running lights.

The hood sits higher and flatter, giving the front end a more upright, confident stance, while stronger shoulder lines and a wider track add visual presence from the side. The Limited trim rides on beautiful 18” alloy wheels and there is body-color door handles and mirrors, dark window surrounds, and virtually no chrome. Around back, you’ll find sleek LED taillamps, a hands-free power liftgate, and integrated roof rails that add both utility and visual balance. Overall, the redesign gives the Cherokee a much more upscale appearance. My tester is Silver Zynith Clear Coat and all-in-all, this is a very attractive, rich-looking SUV.

Interior

When you open the door you see an obvious step up in refinement, with a clean, horizontal dashboard layout that emphasizes width and space. The centerpiece is a 12.3” high-resolution touchscreen that houses the Uconnect 5 system seamlessly integrated into the dash, paired with a 10.25” fully digital instrument cluster that gives the cabin a modern, tech-forward feel without overwhelming the driver. Soft-touch materials cover the upper dash and door panels, accented by contrast stitching and tasteful metallic trim that adds a subtle upscale touch.

I’ve always been a fan of Uconnect for its ease of use and speed. The screen serves as the command center for navigation, audio, phone connectivity, vehicle settings, and hybrid system data. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth streaming, multiple user profiles, and over-the-air software updates. It also integrates climate controls, heated seat and steering wheel functions, and customizable home screens that allow drivers to prioritize frequently used features.

Hybrid-specific displays provide real-time information on power flow, regenerative braking activity, and fuel economy trends, giving drivers insight into how the gasoline engine and electric motor are working together. Processing speeds are noticeably quicker than prior-generation systems, with sharper graphics and more responsive touch inputs, making everyday operation intuitive and seamless. This is one of the easiest to operate and fastest systems available anywhere.

The center console is wide and well organized, with a rotary-style gear selector and clearly laid-out controls that are intuitive rather than cluttered. You can easily choose from four drive modes that include Sand/Mud, Snow, Auto, and Sport. There are buttons on the console to enable Auto Hold and hill descent control, two large cupholders, a forward cubby hole that is really large and houses USB-C ports, and a soft center glove box with an easy to use wireless phone charger.

Ambient lighting and well-bolstered perforated Capri leatherette seats complete the package, creating an interior that feels more premium and thoughtfully designed than the outgoing model, yet still unmistakably Jeep in character. Overall, this interior looks high quality and clean, almost like you find on many EVs, except there is a real luxury vibe about it. As you look up, there is a huge power panoramic sliding sunroof with a power sliding cover.

Moving to the second row seat, occupants benefit from the SUV’s longer wheelbase, which translates into noticeably improved legroom and a more open feel compared with the 2023. The rear bench is well-cushioned and supportive, with ample headroom and shoulder room for adults, not just kids along for the ride. Outboard passengers get adjustable headrests, and the seatbacks recline slightly for added comfort on longer trips. Rear air vents help maintain consistent cabin temperature, and available USB ports allow passengers to keep devices charged without running cords to the front. There is a fold down armrest with built-in cupholders. Wide-opening rear doors make entry and exit easier, and the flat floor design minimizes the center hump, making the middle seat more usable than before. Overall, the back seat feels thoughtfully designed for families and road trips, not an afterthought.

Utility

The cargo area in this 2026 Cherokee is both practical and easy to use, offering approximately 28 cubic feet of space behind the second row, which is more generous than the outgoing model and competitive in the compact-to-midsize hybrid segment.

Fold the 60/40 split rear seats flat and total cargo capacity expands to about 60 cubic feet, creating a wide, nearly level load floor suitable for larger boxes, luggage, or home-improvement runs. The rear liftgate opening is tall and square, making it easier to load bulky items, and the low liftover height reduces strain when sliding heavier cargo inside. Tie-down hooks, side storage pockets, and a really large under-floor compartment help keep smaller items organized, while the hands-free power liftgate adds convenience when your arms are full. Overall, the redesign gives the Cherokee a more usable and family-friendly cargo area without sacrificing passenger space.

Standard Equipment

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee Limited has an abundance of standard features, like leatherette-trimmed seating, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, the Uconnect 5 infotainment system with a large touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a fully digital instrument cluster, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry with push-button start, remote start, multiple USB ports front and rear, integrated roof rails, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Safety

On the safety front you get a broad suite of advanced driver assistance systems including Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking that detects vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go capability, Lane Departure Warning paired with Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Path Detection, Intersection Collision Assist, and Drowsy/Driver Attention Detection that watches for signs of fatigue or distraction and alerts the driver, along with standard rear parking sensors and a high-definition rearview camera to help in tight spaces — all part of a safety package that reflects more than 140 total safety and security features on the 2026 Cherokee.

One interesting feature popped up during my week with the Cherokee — a notification warning that an emergency vehicle was approaching nearby. The system uses connected traffic data to alert drivers to police cars, ambulances or fire trucks responding to calls, giving you a little extra time to safely move out of the way. It’s a small thing, but it’s actually a pretty clever real-world safety feature that many drivers may notice for the first time and that I hope to see on more cars in the future.

Options

Options on my press fleet vehicle total just over $5,000 and includes a $595 charge for the clear coat paint. It also has the $2000 23G Limited Package which adds heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, driver’s seat memory settings, a hands-free power liftgate, upgraded interior trim accents, ambient lighting enhancements, and additional convenience features that elevate the Cherokee’s comfort and everyday usability.

2026-jeep-chrerokee-limited-hybrid-digital-driver-navigation-carpro

Last there is the $995 Tech Group includes off-road information pages with real-time vehicle data, map-in-cluster display capability that projects navigation directly into the digital instrument panel, built-in GPS navigation, a wonderful Alpine premium audio system with subwoofer, HD Radio, Alexa Built-in integration, enhanced integrated voice command functionality, traffic sign recognition, and a hands-free power liftgate.

What You'll Pay

One last pleasant surprise for me was the price. With all the upgrades on the 2026, including they are now only offered as a hybrid, and the super loaded level of equipment on my test vehicle is coming in at just over $45,000 before any discounts or incentives. I truly expected it to be more the way this one is equipped.

Electronic Door-Release

Now, if I have a complaint, it is that The Cherokee uses an electronic door-release system rather than a purely mechanical latch, so when you push the inside and outside buttons, you’re actually triggering an electronic release that pops the door open. It still feels familiar in everyday use, but the electronic latch allows Jeep to integrate passive entry and other security functions, while a manual emergency release is provided in case of a power loss. Some may like this feature, it’s not a deal killer for me, but I don’t see the need or benefit.

Verdict

To wrap it up, after a couple of years off the market, the 2026 Cherokee Limited returns as a much more polished and competitive SUV, and this one genuinely impressed me. The combination of 210 combined horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque delivers smooth, confident acceleration, especially around town where the electric assist makes it feel livelier than the numbers suggest. Fuel economy is a major step forward, giving buyers the efficiency they expect in this segment without sacrificing capability. The ride is composed and quiet, the steering feels well weighted, and the interior finally matches the upscale expectations of today’s buyers with better materials, smarter tech, and a thoughtful layout. When you factor in the equipment included in the Limited trim and the value of the available Tech Package, this Cherokee feels well priced for what you get. Bottom line: Jeep didn’t just bring the Cherokee back — they brought it back better, and in hybrid form, but it’s still a Jeep and it will do whatever you want it to off the pavement. This Cherokee makes a strong case for anyone shopping the midsized, two-row SUV segment.
