2026 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter i-FORCE Max Review

At first glance, you know this is no ordinary Tacoma. In fact, this may be one of the most accessory laden pickup's I've driven to date. It's the 2026 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter and it's not afraid of a little attention - well-earned thanks to its unique metallic hue, bronze wheels, and my test vehicle's can't-miss-it optional ARB bed rack.

When the Trailhunter debuted on the scene as a 2024 model it was new territory for Toyota's lineup - being its first model crossing into overlanding territory.  It's equipped with a list of factory-installed expedition equipment and designed for adventurous overlanding over long distances. Its designed specifically to tackle low-speed terrain obstacles like rock crawling. This is distinctively different from the Tacoma TRD Pro that's more about high-performance, aggressive off-roading with a performance-tuned suspension for tackling challenging terrain.

Exterior

There's no shortage of cool-factors to talk about when it comes to the Trailhunter-badged exterior.

From the rich, metallic Bronze oxide hue,  18-inch bronze-finished wheels and unique Bronze Toyota Heritage Grille with an integrated light bar, to the Rigid Industries White Amber LED fog lights, frame-mounted rock rails and ARB equipment that includes a steel rear bumper with red recovery hooks, sport bar and optional ARB bed rack, this truck commands your attention.

Other overloading equipment includes all-terrain tires designed to deliver superior traction, a enhanced skid plates to protect the engine, transfer case, fuel tank, and rear differential, and high-clearance trail exhaust tip. A high-mount air intake on the passenger's side is designed to funnel clean air into the engine when the dust is flying.

This Trailhunter has the standard 5-foot bed, a 6 footer is optional. A Tacoma stamped power open close tailgate gives you access to a 2400W/120V bed-mounted AC power supply.

Performance and Capability

The Trailhunter's 2.4-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged iMAX hybrid powertrain delivers a robust 323 horses and outstanding 465 pound-feet of torque. It's mated to an 8-speed automatic.

Standard equipment includes 4WDemand part-time 4x4, Old Man EMU forged monotube shocks w/ rear reservoirs, an electronically controlled locking rear differential, front stabilizer disconnect mechanism, and high-clearance performance exhaust.   A multi-terrain monitor helps guide you on the trail.

The Trailhunter also comes with a Class-IV towing hitch receiver and wiring harness with 7-pin/4-pin connector, a Trailer Backup Guide, Trailer Blind Spot Monitor and Trailer Camera.

Interior

The comfortable, well-made interior of the Tacoma is really enjoyable and the Trailhunter's unique elements give the cabin its own character.  Bronze Toyota lettering adorns the dash - and Trailhunter badges are affixed to the door panels. Contrast stitching adds to the upscale, tailored look.

Wow, are the SofTex-trimmed heated and ventilated front seats comfortable. The driver's seat is 8-way power, and the passenger's is 6-way.  A large, heated steering wheel fits the size and style of the cabin. Large climate dial knobs lends an old-school vibe.

A large center console is all about function with a large leather-wrapped gear shift knob,  all the controls you need to off-road and control capability, a rubber console grab handle for the passenger and two large cupholders. A wireless charger sits directly in front of the console command area, underneath center stack.

Technology features include a 12.3-inch digital driver display and a 14-inch multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Toyota's latest system hasn't arrived to the Tacoma lineup yet. The Trailhunter is treated to a 10-speaker JBL sound system

The 2nd-row of the Tacoma with 60/40 split folding seats is on the tighter side, and stadium seating means you lose some headroom.  There are no A/C vents back there but there are two USB-ports, door grab handles and soft-touch seat backs.

Standard features include dual-zone climate, wireless charging, pre-wired DC auxiliary switches, a smart key system on the front doors, and a head up display.

Ride and Drive

The Trailhunter's on-road manners are impressive and it's just a very enjoyable pickup to ride and drive with fantastic power, a comfortable suspension and a great view of the road thanks to its 11-inches of ground clearance.

Safety

The Tacoma lineup is equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 which includes PreCollision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Automatic High Beams and Proactive Driving Assist. Blind spot monitor with Rear Cross Traffic are also standard along with Front and Rear Parking Assist.

Options And What You'll Pay

The Trailhunter already comes well-equipped. But Toyota throws in some additional goodies here. They include a Towing Tech Package ($850), Mini Tie Down ($45), Bed Mat ($200), Ball Mount ($70), Bronze Grille Letter Overlay ($285), Spare Tire Lock ($75), Tailgate Insert Bronze ($89), ARB Bed Rack HD Kit w/Molle Panels ($2,065), ARB bed rack HD kit with Molle panels ($2065), IP slide accessory LED lantern 160.

As equipped MSRP is $68,784.

Verdict

The Trailhunter is a really cool truck and you don't have to be an off-roader to enjoy it. That said, for the price, you'll really want to use it for what it's intended for, long journeys and hitting the trail to explore.
