2026 Toyota GR Corolla Premium Plus Review

I know what you're asking yourself - can a Corolla really be exciting?  The answer when it comes to the 2026 GR Corolla hot-hatch is, unequivocally, yes.  Toyota does not oversell the GR Corolla in the least as a track-tested, performance-oriented hatchback. The best part is that you don't need to be a track enthusiast to enjoy it because underneath its sporty exterior is a practical side which makes it an exciting daily driver.

New for 2026

New this year, Gazoo Racing (GR) improvements include new structural enhancements designed to improve body rigidity which Toyota says helps with steering and cornering. A new secondary air intake improves engine temperature control and helps deliver maximum performance. In the cabin, an enhanced premium JBL sound system now features 9 speakers in the Premium Plus. The premium system also gains Active Sound Control.

Exterior

My test vehicle's premium paint hue, Supersonic Red, is immediately commanding. The Premium Plus is treated to a very-cool forged carbon fiber roof.  A gloss-black spoiler with an optional rear window spoiler and matte-black 15-inch alloy wheels with optional black lug nuts really bring the sporty look all together.

Other GR-badged features include a bulge hood with functional gloss-black air vents, widened front and fender flares, Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires and triple-exhaust with stainless steel tips.

Performance and Capability

A turbocharged 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine delivers 300-horses and a nearly matching 295 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration is punchy and fun, and you can feel the torque at work in in its impressive handling. Also integral to the GR Corolla's performance is its rally racing developed GR-FOUR All-Wheel Drive system that optimizes drive power to each wheel, along with its standard front and rear Torsen® Limited-Slip rear differentials.

I spent the week with a smooth-shifting 6-speed manual gearbox with rev-matching technology, but an 8-speed automatic with launch control is available.

Interior

The centerpiece of the driver-centric sporty cabin:  Brin Naub® synthetic suede and synthetic leather-trimmed, heated, sport bolstered seats with red contrast stitching. Both front seats adjust manually but that's no big deal.  They're well-designed, look amazing and feel terrific.

Technology includes Toyota's familiar 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster with great track performance graphics, and an 8-inch touchscreen with Toyota's last-generation multimedia system that offers "Hey Toyota" voice commands, along with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto capability.

You'll find old school dual-zone climate up front in the center stack, but there are no A/C vents in the back.  The glossy black-trimmed center console is home to the gear shifter, a drive mode dial and a handle parking brake.

A roomy second row also features comfortable suede-insert seats. The back end of the center console integrates a USB port and storage tray. Passengers have a drop-down center armrest with cupholders and soft-touch seatbacks offer pockets.

GR-badged features include a red stop/start button, a GR-badged leather-trimmed, heated, sport steering wheel and gear shift knob.  Standard features across both trims include aluminum pedals, 2 USB-C charge ports and wireless charging.

Ride and Drive

You're going to have fun behind the wheel of this one. It feels like the GR86 to me - a two-door coupe I love. Acceleration and handling are terrific and the well-bolstered sport seats really keep you in place. The six-speed manual makes it all the more fun over an automatic - though it's not wonderful if you're in a stop-and-go highway commute situation. Drive modes to adjust rear end torque distribution based on driving conditions include Normal, Gravel and Track AWD. The Active Noise Control really sounds great. I drove the 2023 GR Corolla on the track back in 2023 at an automotive event so I can attest to its track prowess back then - and there have been improvements since then.

Safety

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard. It includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Automatic High Beams.  Also standard: front and rear parking sensors, rearview camera, and blind sport monitor with rear-cross traffic alert.

Note that only automatic transmission (AT) models are equipped with Proactive Driving Assist and Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

Premium Plus models include a Head-up Display.

Options

Options include: premium Supersonic Red paint ($475), cargo net ($65), rear window spoiler ($855), Carpet floor mat/Carpet Cargo Mat ($309), Styling Package: Core Grades Shift Knob, Door Sill Protectors ($319), Black lug nuts and wheel locks ($200). MSRP as equipped is just over $49K.

Verdict

The GR Corolla is a fantastic fun-to-drive hot hatch that's equally at home on the city street or highway as it is the track.

GR Corolla buyers receive a one-year NASA (National Auto Sport Association) Membership that includes a 1-day High Performance Driving Event as a benefit.
