2026 Kia Sportage Plug-In Hybrid X-Line AWD Review

Written By: Jerry Reynolds | Mar 2, 2026 1:41:15 PM

This week I am taking a look at the 2026 Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid. For 2026, Kia has given the Sportage a makeover that really puts this SUV in the near luxury category when you consider the beautiful interior and the high level of equipment. The X-Line Prestige AWD that I am reviewing has fresh styling, an updated grille, and a cockpit that’s gone all-in on screens, including dual 12.3-inch displays. Under the outer skin it’s mostly the same architecture but it gains a terrain mode for AWD versions like this one, and adds smarter safety/tech features, giving buyers more reason to upgrade than just the new paint colors.

Kia trim levels can be confusing, so I wanted to run through them so you have a sense of where my review vehicle falls within the lineup. For 2026, the Sportage lineup starts with the LX, then moves to the EX, followed by the X-Line AWD (my tester), then the SX, the SX Prestige, and finally the off-road-focused X-Pro Prestige as the most expensive model in the range. There are three engine choices in Sportage: a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine in the gas models, a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor in the Sportage Hybrid, and a more powerful version of that 1.6-liter turbo with a larger battery pack in the Sportage Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) which I what I bring you today. In the overall Kia SUV lineup, Sportage falls between Seltos and Sorrento.

Exterior

The exterior looks of the Sportage are beautiful all the way around. I love the updated tiger grill that has become a mainstay on newer Kias, the 19” alloy wheels look good, it has bold lines, and a spoiler that covers the rear wiper, a feature usually found on way more expensive SUVs and a feature I like a lot, especially when going to a car wash.

LED headlights greet you, and you find black trim along the bottom of the SUV between the front and rear wheels, black trim around the windows, black wheel arches, and black roof rails. This is the Shadow Matte Gray color which is a $595 upgrade, and isn’t for everyone, but I really like it.

Perfomance

Under the hood of this 2026 Sportage Plug-In Hybrid is a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a more powerful electric motor and a larger lithium-ion battery pack, working through a six-speed conventional automatic transmission to deliver a combined 261 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Unlike the standard hybrid, this is a true plug-in system, meaning you can charge it at home or at a public Level 2 charger and drive on electricity alone for an estimated 34 miles before the gasoline engine steps in. When the battery is depleted, it operates like a traditional hybrid, seamlessly blending gas and electric power while capturing energy through regenerative braking. The result is noticeably stronger off-the-line acceleration than the regular hybrid, the ability to handle most daily commutes without using a drop of gasoline, and the security of all-wheel drive when weather or road conditions turn ugly. It’s a well-executed setup that gives you legitimate EV capability without asking you to commit fully to life without a gas pump.

From the steering wheel, you can choose from three drive modes: Eco, Sport, and My Drive (which you can configure) and three Terrain modes: Snow, Mud, Sand for choosing the all-wheel setting that best fits your situation at the time.

Interior

As I opened the door for the first time, I was thrilled to see a light colored interior called Terracotta, not black like most these days. The immediate vibe presents a clean, modern finish that balances sophistication with practicality. The seats feature Kia’s SynTex premium leatherette with the lighter color lending the cabin an airy, upscale ambiance. The material has a soft-touch surface with subtle texture.

Contrast stitching accents outline the bolsters and seat backs, adding a visual layer of refinement and reinforcing the sense of tailored craftsmanship. In the X-Line Prestige model, the seats are generously contoured, with defined side bolsters that subtly wrap the thighs and shoulders that offer comfort and support. Both front seats are heated and cooled, and the driver gets a power seat and power lumbar support, plus settings for the memory for two people. Look up and you’ll see a panoramic power moon roof.

Hit the pushbutton start and the amazing 12.3” digital driver gauge cluster comes to life, welcoming you with a colorful and configurable info center in the middle. You can change it drastically from the settings on the heated, leather-wrapped, oval-shaped, tilt steering wheel. This is half of a new screen setup for 2026 that appears as one large screen and it is slightly curved for a better view for the driver. You can’t help but notice it when you enter the cabin.

The center console is terrific with 3-USB ports and a wireless phone charger. There are two cupholders there and an extra cubby for your toll tag or phone if needed. The round shift dial is there, and you go to Park by pushing a button in the middle. This is also where you activate the Auto Hold, and turn on the heated steering wheel, set the emergency brake, the parking assist, camera views, and hill descent control. There are switches to turn on the heated and air-conditioned seats. The larger switch in the middle is the EV/HEV button that allows you to prioritize all-electric driving or switch to hybrid mode, letting you manage when the gasoline engine engages and helping you maximize efficiency based on your driving needs.

I love that there are dedicated knobs to set the automatic temperature-controlled air conditioning and radio volume and tuning, but the display that operates both have to be switched. In other words, you have to hit a small arrow to change the panel. If it is on the A/C screen, the knob to adjust the temperature is the same one as the radio volume so you have to look to see which one is on. It is not a deal killer, but an annoyance that could be avoided, and it requires taking your eyes off the road.

Center dash is the other half of the 12.3” screen and it operates the Harmon Kardon Premium sound system, navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, the terrific front and rear cameras, SiriusXM, HD radio, Wi-Fi Hotspot, and Bluetooth. From the screen, you can scroll through more pages to operate phone projection, watch YouTube videos, record voice memos, get real-time weather and sports updates, get service reminders, and something cool called Connected Garage. It lets you open or close your home garage door from anywhere through the infotainment screen or Kia Access app, adding a touch of convenience that makes leaving the driveway feel a little more high-tech than it used to. I have a garage door app on my phone, and it is wonderful for when you get far from home and wonder if you put the garage door down, and when you need to accept a delivery and you are away. Everything on the center screen is super easy to navigate through and it is lightning fast.

Moving to the second-row bench seat, you will find an unexpectedly roomy and comfortable space for a compact SUV. The rear seats offer generous legroom and headroom, thanks to the Sportage’s stretched wheelbase, and the seatbacks recline to improve long-trip comfort. The SynTex upholstery and rear air vents give the cabin a premium feel, while heated seats are standard on this trim. Two USB-C charging ports are built-into the back of the front seats, and a fold-down center armrest with cupholders add convenience. Wide door openings make getting in and out easy. Overall, the second row feels thoughtfully designed for adults as well as kids—quiet, comfortable, and well-insulated from road noise, with a nearly flat floor that makes the middle seat more usable than most in this class.

Utility

Going to the cargo area using the power liftgate, it offers a very versatile cargo area. Behind the rear seats, there’s 39.5 cubic feet of space—plenty for luggage, strollers, or a full grocery haul. Fold the second row flat and capacity expands to 73.7 cubic feet, creating a nearly level load floor that makes it easy to slide in bulkier items.

A dual-level cargo floor lets owners adjust between maximum depth or a flat surface for easier loading, and the wide tailgate opening accommodates larger boxes or sports gear. There is some storage underneath where you keep your charging cord and you could hide valuable there.

Standard Equipment

The Sportage X-Line Prestige comes completely loaded. It has heated and cooled front seats, the 12.3-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power driver’s seat, smart key with push-button start, and a hands-free smart power liftgate. You also get LED exterior lighting, roof rails, alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, and multiple USB ports throughout the cabin. Materials are upscale with soft-touch surfaces in key areas, and the flat-bottom steering wheel and rotary shifter give the interior a modern, high-tech feel without being overly complicated.

Other niceties include a manual tilt/telescoping steering column, ambient interior LED lighting, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system. Connectivity and convenience are further heightened with keyless entry, surround view rear mirror, power folding outside mirrors, and front and rear USB-C ports. There is a terrific head-up display, alloy pedals. The standard power panoramic moon roof also has a power sliding cover to block out the sun.

Also standard is Kia’s Highway Driving Assist 2, which is the enhanced hands-on driver-assistance system designed for controlled-access highways. It combines adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-centering technology to help maintain a set speed, keep a safe following distance, and actively steer to keep the vehicle centered in its lane. The “2” version adds lane-change assist — when you signal, the system can automatically steer the vehicle into the adjacent lane if sensors determine it’s clear — along with more advanced blind-spot monitoring that can apply corrective steering if you begin moving toward a vehicle in your blind spot. It uses forward-facing cameras, radar sensors, and navigation data on mapped highways to anticipate curves and adjust speed when necessary.

Options

Options on my tester, besides the Matte paint I told you about before, is exactly $500 for carpeted floor mats, a cargo mat in the rear, and a cargo cover to hide items in the cargo area.

Safety

Safety-wise, the Sportage includes forward collision avoidance assist with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot collision avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, lane following assist, driver attention warning, safe exit warning, rear occupant alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera with dynamic guidelines. Together, these systems use cameras and radar sensors to monitor traffic ahead, alongside, and behind the vehicle, providing visual and audible alerts — and in some cases automatic braking or steering input — to help the driver avoid or mitigate potential collisions.

Ride and Drive

Fuel economy with this plug-in hybrid is just outstanding at 36 MPG city combined and when you factor in the amount of miles driven on just the battery you get an MPGe rating of 83 miles per gallon. Total MSRP as you see it here is $49,730 and frankly, it’s amazing you can get this much in an all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid SUV at that price with this level of features.

Ride and Drive

I have to note the quietness inside the Sportage, it is clear this is something Kia has really worked on, and it is noticeable. If you want to venture off the pavement, the All-Wheel system in this SUV will certainly do the job, but it is also very pleasurable in town, it is easy to park, and the visibility all-around is great. Acceleration in Sport mode is much better with the plug-in hybrid than the regular hybrid. It will flat get up and go!

Notable Features

For me, it’s the little things that make a vehicle. Two such things that you wouldn’t expect on any vehicle in this price range is the remote start. That in itself isn’t unusual, but with most vehicles, you hit the remote start and once you get inside, you have to put your foot on the brake and push the start button. With this Sportage, just enter the cabin with the key on you, and it comes to life. You are ready to go. Second, I love head-up displays, they allow you to keep your eyes ahead on the road. This head-up will show you if there is anything in your blind spot. You don’t have to look at the mirrors or down at the dash to know it is safe to make a lane change. Two small things, but they make your life just a little easier and a little safer.

Also really cool is Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA). It allows you to use the key fob to move the Sportage forward or backward while you stand outside the vehicle — helpful for tight garage spaces or crowded parking lots where opening the doors would be difficult. The system uses the SUV’s ultrasonic sensors to monitor surroundings and will automatically brake if it detects an obstacle while maneuvering at low speeds. You can see the system in action here.

Range and Charging

Some people question the usefulness of a plug-in hybrid, and some people should just get the regular hybrid, which gets really good fuel economy as well. However, if your daily commute is less than 15 miles one-way, and you can charge your Sportage at home, you’ll never visit a gas station again unless you travel farther than the 34 mile all-electric range. Unlike EVs, you can travel across America without worrying about finding a charging station. I’ve had listeners tell me that they go as long as a year without putting any gas in their car.

Even with a plug-in hybrid, I recommend a home charger like the one I have for easy charging overnight. On a standard 110-volt household outlet (Level 1), expect a full charge to take roughly 10 to 12 hours from empty, but with a 240-volt Level 2 home charger, that drops to about 2 hours; and on a DC fast charger (Level 3), you can typically go from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 to 40 minutes, depending on charging conditions and battery state.

Verdict

Kia killed it with this Sportage Plug-In. Overall, Sportage has been a runaway hit since it came out. It is an outstanding value and of course you get the 10-year/100,000 mile warranty with it, and that includes all the plug-in hybrid portion.
