2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L Summit Obsidian Review

Written By: Jerry Reynolds | Jul 27, 2026 2:21:40 PM

This week I am behind the wheel of the 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L Summit Obsidian 4X4, a full-sized, body-on-frame luxury SUV with three rows of seating and enough technology to make some homes feel under-equipped.

The “L” designation means this is the extended-wheelbase version, designed to provide substantially more cargo room behind the third-row seat. My seven-passenger tester is finished in Bright White Clear-Coat with a contrasting black roof, Global Black leather upholstery and the dark exterior accents that come with the Obsidian Appearance Package.

What’s New

Jeep has substantially reorganized the Grand Wagoneer family for 2026. The previous Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer lineups have been consolidated under the Grand Wagoneer name, while the old Series I, Series II and Series III trim designations have been replaced by more conventional trim names.

The exterior receives a cleaner and more contemporary front end with slim LED lighting, a redesigned seven-slot grille and prominent Jeep identification. That last part is noteworthy because Jeep originally tried to establish Wagoneer as a separate premium sub-brand and kept the Jeep name off the vehicle. For 2026, Jeep is back on the grille, tailgate and window sticker.

The Summit Obsidian is one of the most luxurious Grand Wagoneers, combining the Summit equipment level with black wheels, gloss-black exterior trim, a black roof and darker interior accents.

Exterior

The Grand Wagoneer L has a massive presence, but the proportions are good enough that it does not look like someone simply stretched a normal SUV with Photoshop. The long roofline, large side glass and squared-off rear maximize interior room, while the updated lighting and blacked-out trim make it appear lower and sleeker than its size suggests.

The Obsidian Appearance Package adds 22-inch painted Black Noise wheels with gloss-black inserts, black exterior accents and black chiseled-metal interior trim. The contrast between the Bright White paint, black roof and dark wheels works especially well.

The optional power-deployable running boards extend when a door is opened and disappear beneath the body after everyone is aboard. They are not just decorative, either. With this SUV’s available ride height, they make getting in considerably easier.

All in all, this is an attractive SUV and I’ve had many compliments on it this week.

Powertrain

Under the hood is Jeep’s 3-liter Hurricane twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, producing 420-horsepower and 468 pound-feet of torque. It is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission controlled by a rotary shifter on the center console.

This Grand Wagoneer is equipped with a true four-wheel-drive system, not merely a light-duty all-wheel-drive arrangement. The included Heavy-Duty Trailer-Tow Package brings a two-speed on-demand transfer case, an electronic rear limited-slip differential, a 3.92 rear axle ratio, Selec-Speed Control, trailer-brake controller, trailer-hitch zoom, trailer-light monitoring and blind-spot monitoring that can account for a connected trailer.

Properly equipped, this particular Grand Wagoneer L is rated to tow 9,860 pounds, putting it among the strongest towing choices in the full-sized luxury SUV class. You know acceleration is a priority of mine and in spite of the size, this SUV will move, especially in Sport Mode. Yes, I loved the 5.7 Hemi V8 but given the choice, I’ll take this Hurricane all day long.

Interior

Inside, the Grand Wagoneer L makes a convincing case that a Jeep can compete with established luxury brands. The cabin is covered in Nappa leather, soft-touch surfaces, metal trim, gloss-black panels and detailed stitching. The overall appearance is upscale without becoming overly ornate.

The driver receives a 24-way power-adjustable seat, while the front passenger has a 12-way power seat. Both front seats are heated, ventilated and equipped with massage functions. They are wide, supportive and extremely comfortable, making this a vehicle in which I could spend an entire day without feeling worn out.

Between the seats is a broad center console with a padded armrest, cupholders, storage and a beautifully finished control area. The rotary gear selector is joined by the Selec-Terrain control, four-wheel-drive low-range button and controls for the Quadra-Lift air suspension.

There is a considerable amount of gloss-black material around the console and screens which I could do without. It looks terrific immediately after cleaning, but fingerprints make me crazy and there is just no way around it

What’s Neat and What Sets It Apart

There are seven primary screens in this particular Grand Wagoneer, totaling exactly 75 inches of display area. Those include the 12-inch digital instrument cluster, 12-inch Uconnect center touchscreen, 10.25-inch front-passenger display, 10.25-inch front comfort display, 10.25-inch second-row comfort display and two 10.1-inch rear entertainment screens. The digital rearview mirror gives you an eighth electronic display, although it is not included in Jeep’s advertised 75-inch total.

2026-Jeep-Grand-Wagoneer-L-Summit-Obsidian-wbap-2-carpro.jThe 10.25-inch lower front screen is especially clever. It controls the front-seat heating, ventilation, massage and lumbar functions, along with climate settings. Push a button and the entire screen electrically pivots upward to uncover a hidden compartment containing the wireless phone charger, storage and multiple device connections. Push the button again and it quietly folds back into place. It is one of those features you will demonstrate to people whether they asked to see it or not.

The front passenger has a separate interactive screen built into the dashboard. The passenger can operate navigation, select entertainment and view feeds from the exterior cameras. A privacy filter prevents the driver from clearly seeing the screen while underway, reducing the possibility that the latest movie becomes more interesting than the highway. The front-passenger display is part of the optional Premium Group III.

Another standout feature is the two-view interior rear-monitoring camera. It gives the driver a clear look at passengers in both rear rows through the main center screen. It is particularly useful for families because you can see what the children are doing without turning around and issuing the traditional parental warning shot.

The power running boards, automatic air-suspension entry height and proximity lighting also give the Grand Wagoneer a memorable greeting. Walk up with the key, and the vehicle illuminates, unlocks and lowers the running boards as though it has been expecting you.

What truly separates this SUV from many luxury competitors is the combination of technology and genuine Jeep hardware. It has massaging seats, Fire TV and more screens than some electronics stores, but underneath it also has low-range four-wheel drive, an electronic limited-slip rear differential, an air suspension that can raise the body for rough terrain and nearly 10,000 pounds of towing capability. Many luxury SUVs are excellent pavement vehicles. This one is prepared for considerably more.

Standard Features

The standard-equipment list on this Summit Obsidian includes Nappa leather upholstery, a tri-pane panoramic sunroof, four-zone automatic climate control, heated front and second-row seats, ventilated and massaging front seats, a heated power-adjustable steering wheel, second-row manual window shades, power-folding and reclining third-row seats, remote start, proximity entry for all four doors and automatic high-beam headlights.

Entertainment is supplied by a McIntosh MX950 system with 19 speakers, along with navigation, SiriusXM with 360L, HD Radio, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless phone charging and numerous USB connections.

Driver Information

Directly in front of the driver is a configurable 12-inch color digital instrument cluster. It can display traditional gauges, navigation directions, trip information, fuel economy, driver-assistance status, four-wheel-drive information and other vehicle data.

2026-Jeep-Grand-Wagoneer-L-Summit-Obsidian-driver-display-speed-carpro.j

The head-up display projects speed, navigation instructions, traffic-sign information and driver-assistance alerts onto the windshield. Between the instrument panel and head-up display, most of the information you need is available without taking your eyes far from the road.

The optional digital rearview mirror can operate as a conventional mirror or display a live camera view from behind the SUV. This is particularly valuable when passengers or cargo block the normal rearward view.

Center Screen

The main 12-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen is one of the better infotainment systems available. The graphics are clear, responses are quick and the menu structure is easier to understand than many rival systems.

2026-Jeep-Grand-Wagoneer-L-Summit-Obsidian-multimedia-vehicle-settings-carpro.j

It controls navigation, audio, cameras, climate functions, vehicle settings, seat controls, smartphone integration and the interior rear-monitoring camera. Frequently used icons can be placed along the bottom of the screen, and Jeep wisely retains physical switches for several commonly used climate and vehicle functions.

The standard McIntosh system sounds excellent, with strong bass and crisp vocals without becoming harsh at higher volume. A more powerful 23-speaker McIntosh system is available elsewhere in the lineup, but the 19-speaker system in this tester will be more than enough for most people.

Drive Modes and Suspension

The Selec-Terrain system offers Auto, Sport, Snow, Sand/Mud and Rock settings. Each mode adjusts throttle response, transmission programming, traction control, torque distribution and suspension behavior to suit the selected conditions.

2026-Jeep-Grand-Wagoneer-L-Summit-Obsidian-digital-driver-display-terrain-status-carpro.j

Sport mode noticeably sharpens the throttle and keeps the transmission in lower gears longer, making this very large SUV feel more energetic. Snow mode calms the power delivery, while Sand/Mud and Rock prepare the four-wheel-drive system for loose or uneven terrain.

The Quadra-Lift air suspension can lower the Grand Wagoneer for entry and cargo loading, reduce its height at highway speeds for improved aerodynamics or raise it when additional ground clearance is needed. The ride-height controls are located beside the terrain selector, and the changes are shown on the instrument cluster.

Second and Third Rows

The second row consists of two heated captain’s chairs that slide, recline and power-tilt forward. The Premium Group III adds ventilation to those seats. There is an open passage between them, making third-row access possible without folding either seat.

2026-Jeep-Grand-Wagoneer-L-Summit-Obsidian-2nd-row-carpro

Second-row passengers receive their own 10.25-inch touchscreen for climate, heated and ventilated seat controls, along with air vents, cupholders and multiple charging ports.

The Rear-Seat Entertainment Group adds two 10.1-inch touchscreens mounted to the backs of the front seats, with Amazon Fire TV Built-In. Each passenger can select entertainment independently, and the system can also accept outside devices.

2026-Jeep-Grand-Wagoneer-L-Summit-Obsidian-3rd-row-carpro

The third row seats three people and is much more usable than the token third rows found in many SUVs. Legroom is a generous 36.6 inches, and the large side windows keep the area from feeling like punishment for being the last person into the vehicle.

The 60/40-split third-row seatbacks can be power-folded or reclined, and switches in the cargo area operate the rear seats. Adults can use the third row, not just children, although the second-row captain’s chairs remain the preferred accommodations.

Utility

Cargo room is where the Grand Wagoneer L really shines. There are 42.6 cubic feet behind the third row, which means a family can carry seven people without leaving everyone’s luggage at home.

2026-Jeep-Grand-Wagoneer-L-Summit-Obsidian-cargo-carpro

Folding the third row opens 88.8 cubic feet, and lowering both rear rows increases maximum capacity to 116.7 cubic feet. The load floor is wide and flat, and the optional reversible cargo mat helps protect the carpet when hauling dirty or wet items.

A full-sized spare tire is included, something I strongly prefer in a vehicle intended for towing, family travel and long-distance driving.

Safety

Standard safety and driver-assistance equipment includes Active Driving Assist, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, Active Lane Management, full-speed forward-collision warning with active braking, pedestrian and cyclist emergency braking, intersection collision assistance, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, drowsy-driver detection, traffic-sign recognition and automatic brake hold.

You also get front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking, automated parallel and perpendicular parking and a 360-degree surround-view camera. Active Driving Assist can help maintain speed, following distance and lane position, but it remains a hands-on-wheel, eyes-on-road system.

The government safety label on this vehicle shows four stars overall, five stars for frontal impact, five stars for side impact and three stars for rollover.

Options

The power-deployable running boards add $995.

Premium Group III is $2,995 and includes ventilated second-row seats, the 10.25-inch front-passenger interactive display, digital rearview mirror and reversible cargo mat.

2026-Jeep-Grand-Wagoneer-L-Summit-Obsidian-rear-seat-entertainment-netflix-carpro.j

The Rear-Seat Entertainment Group is $2,795 and adds Amazon Fire TV Built-In and two 10.1-inch rear entertainment screens.

The Obsidian Appearance Package and Heavy-Duty Trailer-Tow Package are included as part of this vehicle’s configuration rather than listed as additional-cost packages.

Ride and Drive

On the road, the Grand Wagoneer L feels remarkably composed for something this large and heavy. The Hurricane six-cylinder is smooth and quiet, and its 468 pound-feet of torque moves the SUV confidently without requiring the engine to work particularly hard.

The eight-speed automatic shifts smoothly and generally stays out of the way. There is enough power for easy highway merging and passing, although this is a luxury SUV rather than a high-performance one. Sport mode adds a noticeable amount of urgency when desired.

The Quadra-Lift air suspension is a major part of the experience. It absorbs rough pavement well while keeping body movement under control, and the cabin remains exceptionally quiet at highway speeds. The steering is light but accurate, which helps make the Grand Wagoneer less intimidating in everyday driving.

The surround-view cameras, parking sensors and digital mirror are invaluable in tight spaces. At more than 19 feet long, this is not the vehicle in which to confidently grab the smallest parking space and hope for the best.

Fuel economy is rated at 16 miles per gallon in the city, 22 on the highway and 18 combined.

Verdict

Now for the price. The base MSRP of this 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L Summit Obsidian 4X4 is $97,310. With the power running boards, Premium Group III, rear entertainment system and destination charge, the total window sticker comes to $106,890.

That is a substantial amount of money, but this is not a lightly equipped SUV wearing a luxury price tag. It is enormous, beautifully furnished, exceptionally quiet, remarkably comfortable and loaded with useful technology. It also offers genuine four-wheel-drive hardware, serious towing capability and more cargo room behind the third row than most families will ever fill. If you’ve priced large 3-row SUVs lately, that price will look extremely attractive.

The Grand Wagoneer’s greatest strength is that it does several jobs extremely well. It can be a comfortable daily driver, a luxury highway cruiser, a seven-passenger family vehicle, a tow vehicle and a legitimate four-wheel-drive SUV. Competitors may equal it in certain areas, but few combine all of those qualities with seven screens, 75 inches of display area and a dashboard screen that performs its own disappearing act.
