It's been two years since I've reviewed the Elantra - the last time being the 2024 Elantra N which wowed me with its performance. This week I bring you the 2026 Elantra Limited Hybrid - a compact sedan that wows in a decidedly different area - fuel economy. I'm not the only one whose noticed either. Elantra hybrid sales set an all-time sales record, up by 13% year over year. (The larger Sonata HEV also set an all-time sales record up 85%, and the Tucson HEV was up 5%).
Exterior
My Limited test vehicle wears a premium Serenity White paint hue and rides on machine-finished 17-inch alloy wheels. Sporty design updates in 2024 included a new streamlined front end with a new two-piece grill and thinner daytime running lights.
The Limited wears a black grille and glossy black window moldings and door handles. It's equipped with dual power two-tone heated side mirrors along with LED headlights, daytime running lights and tail lights.
Performance
There are two types of hybrids these days - ones designed to deliver great fuel economy, and those designed for performance. The Hyundai Elantra is the former. Its 1.6-liter 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain delivers a non-exciting 139 horsepower but more respectable 195 pound-feet of torque. That is to say, it's not the quickest sedan off the line but the overall acceleration is fine in every day driving. (I'll definitely take it over the Toyota Corolla hybrid's 138 horses and 105 pound-feet of torque.) The engine is mated to a smooth-shifting 6-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission.
For an Elantra comparison, the standard non-hybrid variant makes 147 horsepower but just 132 lb.-ft of torque. The high-performance N model delivers 276 horsepower and 289 lb.-ft.
Interior
Designers did a mostly fantastic job in the interior. Limited highlights include the cushiony seats, textured door panels, quality switchgear and Bose speakers. The cloth headliner is worth a mention, too. Some of the plastics used, however, could be softer.
The Limited features comfortable, well-designed H-Tex leatherette heated and ventilated front seats, and the driver's seat is 6-way power. Notably, the three-level seat ventilation - on both the seat backs and cushions - was exceptional on a hot Texas summer day. So, too, was the wonderfully cold A/C. Speaking of which, the climate controls are of the antiquated, traditional variety, which is a pro or con depending on what you prefer.
The leather-wrapped steering wheel - sans paddle shifters - features haptic-touch controls, glossy black and silver switchgear.
A nicely designed center console with silver hardware and leather-wrapped gear shift knob looks upscale. A well-integrated grab handle on the console's passenger side adds a sporty factor.
Both 12.3-inch digital displays look terrific and are easy to read. The animations and bright colors in the digital driver cluster look great. The high-screen multimedia resolution and graphics impress, too, as does Hyundai's voice command. The 8-speaker Bose sound system is definitely a Limited perk. There's a WiFi Hotspot but I can't quite believe Hyundai still doesn't offer wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in here. Smartphone connectivity remains wired only. Also on my wish list, a wider rearview camera view. It's much smaller than the navigation screen.
A roomy second row is also well-designed with comfortable seats. The 60/40 split fold-down rear seat back has adjustable headrests. There is less window real estate back here due to high door panels. Passengers enjoy a drop-down center armrest with cupholders and A/C vents.
The Elantra offers a lot of space in the cargo area. Limited goodies include a hands-free smart trunk release. You can also use a cleverly concealed trunk opening button integrated into the trunk lid.
Other standard Limited features include dual-zone climate, power sunroof, 4 USB ports split between rows, 64-color ambient lighting, a digital key and 12-volt outlet.
Ride and Drive
Overall, the Elantra hybrid is an enjoyable sedan to drive. It's low to the ground stance - watch your head upon entry - gives it a sportier driving feel I like. Steering and handling are responsive. While the ride is comfortable, it's on the stiffer side on city streets. Choose between Normal, Sport and Smart drive modes.
For a comparison, the Elantra is going to be more engaging behind the wheel than say the Toyota Corolla Hybrid that has comparable horsepower. It's fuel economy is sure to get your attention - it's 40 mpg combined.

Standard Elantra advanced driver features include Blind-Spot Collision-Warning w/ Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Driver Attention Warning and High Beam Assist, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, Safe Exit Warning & Rear Occupant Alert.
Limited adds Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist w/ Pedestrian, Cyclist and Junction-Turning Detection, Smart Cruise Control w/ Stop & Go, and the first generation of Hyundai's Highway Drive Assist.
What You'll Pay
My tester's two options are the Serenity White paint for $500 and carpeted floor mats for $240 bringing the total to just shy of $32,000 with destination.
Verdict
The Hyundai Elantra hybrid is having a moment and its record sales are for a reason. It's affordable, the top-trim offers nice convenience features, it's not totally boring to drive and it's fuel economy is outstanding. All things car shoppers are finding alluring in the current market.
