I have to hand it to the Corolla. You know what you're getting when you get behind the wheel. A tried and true compact sedan that's reliable even though it might not be the most exciting four door on the block. The Corolla Hatchback though delivers a sporty flair to the lineup - as does I'm happy to say the new for 2025 Corolla FX Special Edition. It's a nod to the legendary FX16 that dates back to 1987. That said, don't get too excited as the FX is about appearance and unfortunately not added performance.
Exterior
The Corolla FX gives off sporty vibes with a sport mesh black grill and new 18-inch satin-black finished alloy wheels with machined accents and black lug nuts.
My favorite exterior feature would have to be the $200 black roof followed by an enhanced FX rear spoiler.
Other features include blackout badging, gray metallic sport side rocker panels, black mirror caps and a single exhaust with dual chrome tips.
Powertrain
Now to the disappointing part. The FX doesn't get any power upgrades. It shares the lineup's lackluster 2.0-liter engine that delivers 169 horsepower and 151 lb.-ft. of torque. Yes, I dream of a day the Corolla will get a different powertrain that's more spirited, aka peppy.
Interior
Based on the SE grade, the FX's minimalistic cabin features supportive Moonstone sport fabric seats with orange stitching.
Contrast stitching can also be found on the dash, doors and leather gear shift knob. The leather-wrapped steering wheel has a great fit and finish and silver trim throughout the cabin adds a dose of polish. The FX also marks the Corolla's debut of a larger 10.5-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia screen that protrudes upwards from the center dash.
It's standard on the FX and available on other 2025 Corolla models. Graphics and navigation looks great. The multimedia system is compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Other standard FX features include a 7-inch multi-information display, 6-speaker sound system and a wireless charger.
Ride and Drive
While there is no horsepower boost over the standard Corolla, the FX does benefit from a few differences that make it feel sportier to drive. For one, it sits lower to the ground with standard lowering springs. Toyota also tuned the Electric Power Steering to give steering a sportier feel. Overall, the Corolla FX delivers a solid, comfortable ride that's made it the poplar compact commuter car it is.
Safety
TSS 3.0 is standard. It includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Automatic High Beams, and Proactive Driving Assist.
Options
Aside from the optional black roof, other options include a Convenience Package ($530) with Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Carpet Mat Package/Floor Mats ($299), a trunk LED light ($25), and a UV Sunshade (Windshield) for $110. This brings the total starting price to just under $30,000.
Verdict
The Corolla FX adds a dose of sporty flair to the Corolla lineup in term of looks, but I just can't get past the sluggish powertrain. But for those who don't care about that, the style updates will likely make it an appealing option. Note: a Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX is coming for the 2026 model year. Sadly, it doesn't get a power upgrade either.
