2022 Ram 2500 Cummins Diesel Lone Star Silver Edition Review

This week I have the 2022 Ram 2500 Crew Cab Cummins diesel 4x4, a large capabe truck built especially for those towing or hauling a lot of weight.

My review vehicle is the Lone Star Edition, which is available only in Texas, but for the rest of the country, it is known as the Big Horn package.  This truck also has the Silver Edition package, which gives you a lot of outside appearance bling, such as the 20” wheels, running boards, a huge chrome grill, and much more at a deeply discounted price.

Powertrain

Under the big hood, you’ll find the always wonderful 6.7-liter turbo Cummins putting out 370-horses and an incredible 850-pound feet of torque.  It is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and will tow 20,000 pounds.

Interior

This Lone Star Edition truck has very comfortable cloth, heated and power seats and a large center console and glove box with a sliding tray for all the things you need to carry, including a handy place for cell phones.

The gauges are easy to read and in the middle there is a very configurable driver info center that features a ton of information.

High on the dash is an 8.4” touchscreen that houses the terrific Uconnect 5C infotainment system.  From there, you operate the 9-speaker Alpine stereo with subwoofer, there is a comfort screen, Bluetooth, vehicle settings, and two pages of apps.  The system is fast, intuitive, and extremely easy to operate, although not very colorful.

Under that are control knobs for the radio and the automatic temperature air conditioning, heated steering wheel, USB and USC outlets and a couple of cup holders.

The back seat is massive and folds up with hidden storage underneath, and rear seat passengers get air conditioning vents, USB and USC ports, and a power port.

Standard Features

The Lone Star Silver Edition is not an overly fancy truck, especially inside, but quite comfortable and comes with a lot of nice options.

You get remote start, adaptive cruise control, surround view camera, a bed step, power rear sliding window, front and rear parking assist, a tri-fold tonneau cover, and the terrific automatic leveling system.

On the safety side, you get lane keep assist, stability control, hill start assist, front LED headlights and fog lights, and forward collision warning.

For you trailer-towing folks, it has power trailer-towing mirrors, sway control, a trailer brake controller, trailer backup guidance, a 5th wheel prep package, and trailer surround view camera.

Ride and Drive

The Ram 2500 doesn’t not drive and handle like you’d expect a heavy-duty truck to.  It’s nimble, has a great turning radius, and it doesn’t beat you to death like some ¾ ton trucks do.  Acceleration is very strong and determined.  I’m not sure you’d even know if you had a large trailer behind it.  The engine is incredibly quiet for a diesel.

Bigger than half ton trucks are not rated for fuel economy, but it seems to be doing very well with a 3:73 rear axle. I am averaging right at 20-miles per gallon in mostly in-town driving.

Verdict

MSRP as you see this one is $75,840, which is the going rate for well-equipped large diesel trucks.

Bottom line, this is a great package that looks expensive on the outside, has a very comfortable interior, and it won’t break the bank.
