FORD EXPANDS RECALLS FOR FIRES, PARK OUTSIDE WARNING AND ISSUES NEW FIRE RISK RECALL

Ford is issuing a new recall and expanding a previous recall over issues that pose a fire risk.  There is also an update regarding a fix for the battery issue recall involving the Mach-E.

NEW: 2020-2022 Ford Escape, Maverick, Lincoln Corsair Hybrids or PHEVs

Ford is recalling certain models of the 2020, 2021, and 2022 Ford Escape, Maverick, and Lincoln Corsair due to the risk of under-hood fires. The recall affects over 100,000 vehicles in the US, all of which come with a 2.5-liter hybrid or plug-in hybrid.

In the event of an engine failure, Ford says engine oil and fuel vapor may be released into the engine compartment and accumulate near ignition sources such as hot engine or exhaust components, possibly resulting in an engine compartment fire.  Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have the Under Engine Shield and Active Grille Shutter modified. Ford says it's received 23 reports of incidents related to this issue including under hood fires or vehicle fires,  under hood melting, and under hood smoke.  Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

Recall 573 Report

UPDATE: 2021 Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition Expanded Park Outside Recall

Ford also recently announced it is expanding a previous recall of select 2021 Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition SUVs for the risk of under-hood fires.  The recall originally affected about 39,000 vehicles, but the recall now involves 66,221 cars built between July 27th, 2020 and August 31st, 2021.

Ford says it's traced the problem to a switch in manufacturers during the COVID-19 pandemic, and says the printed circuit boards from this supplier “are uniquely susceptible to a high-current short.”  Ford advises owners to park their cars outside and away from structures, but says they can still drive the vehicle. Replacement parts are expected to become available in early September.

In a recent July 8th press release, Ford reports receiving 21 reports of under hood fires – including five since the original recall filing in May – with 18 incidents impacting vehicles owned by rental companies. Ford says it's expanding the population based on further analysis of the causes for the fires.  Ford says there are no reports of accidents but say it's aware of one report of an injury.

NHTSA Press Release dated May 19, 2022 involving original park outside warning and recall.

UPDATE: Mustang Mach-E Software Fix Now Available

Ford also now has a fix for a Mustang Mach-E battery issue that prompted the recall of 49,000 of the electric SUVs in June. It also put deliveries on hold until it found a fix.  According to a documents filed with NHTSA, dealers now have access to a software update that fixes the issue and Ford over the air updates are scheduled to begin mid-July and continue through mid-August.
