Toyota Releases Details On The New 2027 Tundra Trailhunter

Toyota is giving its full-size Tundra pickup a meaningful update for the 2027 model year, led by a redesigned front end, a new Trailhunter overlanding package, a standard 14-inch multimedia screen and Toyota Safety Sense 4.0. Complete specifications and pricing will be announced in fall 2026, but Toyota has outlined the changes buyers will see first.

WHAT'S NEW FOR 2027

Exterior

The most visible change is the Tundra's new face. Developed by Toyota Motor North America teams, including CALTY Design Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the design uses crisp, square geometry and stronger vertical lines. Toyota says the goal was a more modern, purposeful appearance that still looks unmistakably like a Toyota truck.

Across the lineup, the new front treatment creates a wider, more stable-looking stance. A revised lower center bumper reinforces the tougher appearance, while rectangular fog lights are integrated into the bumper. The grilles retain a hexagonal theme but receive different executions by trim. Toyota also upgraded the grille-mounted LED light bar for brighter output. Available RIGID fog lights improve illumination in poor conditions, and available front recovery hooks add useful hardware.

Trailhunter

The headline addition is Trailhunter, an overlanding package based on the SR5 grade. Toyota says it is intended to deliver greater trail capability directly from the factory at a more accessible price point, although pricing has not yet been announced.

Trailhunter includes Michelin LTX Trail 265/70R18 tires, bronze-colored wheels, an upgraded Old Man Emu suspension, front recovery hooks and additional underbody protection. Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control and a locking rear differential are also included to help with traction and control on difficult terrain. Exclusive badging completes the package. For buyers who want an adventure-ready Tundra without immediately reaching for an aftermarket catalog, Trailhunter may be the most important 2027 addition.

New Standard Features

Technology receives an equally significant update. Every 2027 Tundra will come standard with a 14-inch screen running the latest Toyota Audio Multimedia system. Developed in North America, it incorporates AT&T 5G connectivity, a smartphone-style home screen with customizable widgets and an improved embedded Voice Assistant designed to respond more quickly to "Hey Toyota" commands.

Toyota is also making a built-in Drive Recorder Dash Cam standard. When enabled, the truck's exterior cameras can capture 20-second clips during manually selected or automatically triggered events. Depending on equipment, the system uses the front and rear cameras or the available Panoramic View Monitor cameras. Considering what we witness on the road, Toyota may have added this feature at the right time.

Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 becomes standard for 2027, with updated hardware and detection capability. The suite continues to cover forward-collision assistance, adaptive cruise control, lane-support functions, automatic high beams, road-sign recognition and proactive driving assistance.

Other Available Features

Enhanced Digital Key capability will be available with an active Remote Connect trial or subscription. Owners can manage the key through the Toyota app or a compatible Apple, Google or Samsung digital wallet. The system can lock, unlock, start and operate the truck, and access can be shared with as many as five additional drivers. Near-field communication can continue providing access for a period of time even when the device has no battery life.

Powertrain

Gas and hybrid powertrains continue. Toyota describes the gas engine as a twin-turbocharged V6, while the available i-FORCE MAX hybrid provides additional torque and responsiveness. An available 2.4-kilowatt inverter on i-FORCE MAX grades can power tools, camping equipment and recreational gear.

Trims

The 2027 Tundra lineup includes SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, TRD Pro and Capstone grades, plus Trailhunter.

Toyota is concentrating on the areas owners use most: styling, trail capability, infotainment, connected features and active-safety technology. Based on what Toyota has revealed so far, this looks like a thoughtful update rather than change for the sake of change.
