The Most American-Made Vehicles & The Best Buys

As America marked its 250th birthday, Cars.com released its 2026 American-Made Index, and this year’s list makes one thing very clear: buying American-made is not as simple as looking at the badge on the hood.

Cars.com's AMI ranks vehicles based on several factors, including final assembly location, U.S. and Canadian parts content, engine and transmission origin, and U.S. manufacturing workforce. As in previous years, Cars.com analyzed 350 vehicles. 86 made the final cut.  That means a vehicle does not have to come from a Detroit automaker to make the list, and some vehicles from traditional American brands may not qualify at all. In other words, the window sticker tells the story; the emblem just starts the conversation.

At the very top of the 2026 list, Tesla takes the first two spots with the Model 3 and Model Y. Jeep follows with the Gladiator and Grand Cherokee, while Honda has a very strong showing with the Ridgeline, Odyssey, Accord and Passport all landing in the top 10. Acura, Honda’s luxury division, places the MDX at No. 9, and Lexus makes the top 10 with the TX 350.

There is another side to the Cars.com data that may be even more useful for shoppers: affordability. Cars.com also spotlighted the most affordable vehicles on the 2026 American-Made Index, all of which start under $35,000. More than half of them come in under $30,000, a timely reminder that supporting American manufacturing does not necessarily mean paying a premium.

“The 2026 American-Made Index makes clear that shoppers don't have to choose between supporting American manufacturing and finding a vehicle that fits their budget,” said Patrick Masterson, lead researcher for Cars.com’s American-Made Index. “With more than half of these vehicles starting under $30,000, there are accessible options for cost-conscious consumers who want their purchase to make an economic impact here at home.”

The Most Affordable Models On The 2026 Cars.com American-Made Index

  1. Toyota Corolla LE
  2. Honda Civic LX
  3. Toyota Corolla Cross L
  4. Subaru Crosstrek Base
  5. Nissan Altima SV
  6. Honda Accord LX
  7. Kia Sportage LX
  8. Toyota Camry LE
  9. Hyundai Tucson SE
  10. Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid S

Toyota dominates the affordable side of the list, claiming four of the 10 spots. The Corolla LE is the least expensive American-made vehicle on the index at $24,420, while the Corolla Cross Hybrid S is the highest-priced vehicle on the affordability list at $31,190. Honda follows with two entries, the Civic LX and Accord LX, and the Accord is a standout because it ranks eighth overall on the full American-Made Index while still starting under $30,000.

There is also a good reminder here for shoppers who have written off sedans. SUVs may dominate showroom floors these days, but four of the 10 most affordable American-made vehicles are sedans. For people who want strong value, good fuel economy and a lower payment, the sedan aisle is not dead. It is just quieter, which frankly is more than we can say for some dealership showrooms on a Saturday.

For truck shoppers, Cars.com points to the Hyundai Santa Cruz SE as an honorable mention. It starts at $31,350, making it the least expensive American-made truck on the 2026 index. Its closest competitor, the Ford Maverick, is assembled in Mexico and does not qualify for the index, which is a perfect example of why assembly location matters when shoppers are trying to buy American-made.

Cars.com also says consumer interest in American-made vehicles remains strong. In a recent Cars.com survey, 57% of respondents said they are willing to pay more for a vehicle if it creates U.S. jobs, and 42% said tariffs have made them more likely to seek out an American-made vehicle.

The takeaway is simple: “American-made” no longer fits neatly into old assumptions. Tesla leads the overall list, Honda and Toyota are major players, Jeep is well represented near the top, and some of the most affordable American-made vehicles come from brands many shoppers still think of as imports. That is why the Cars.com American-Made Index is useful. It cuts through the old brand labels and gives shoppers a better look at where a vehicle is built, where its major parts come from, and how much it supports U.S. manufacturing.
