The 10 Most Stolen Vehicles in the U.S. In 2025

Great news when it comes to car thefts! They experienced a historic decline in 2025 according to new data shared Wednesday by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). Vehicle thefts across the U.S. declined in 2025 to the lowest levels in several decades, down 23% from 2024, according to the NICB's new analysis of reported thefts. Researchers attribute the decline to prevention efforts.

Here's how the numbers stack up. The NICB says a total of 659,880 vehicles were reported stolen nationwide in 2025, which is a historic low figure for U.S. vehicle thefts. The NICB calls it a "clear signal of the end of the pandemic-fueled surge in vehicle thefts". This follows a 17% drop in vehicle thefts in 2024, which was previously the largest decrease in thefts in 40 years.

The NICB cautions that while the national decline is encouraging, vehicle theft remains a significant crime, and one that affects hundreds of thousands of Americans each year.  Its stats indicate that one vehicle is still stolen every 48 seconds with the risk even greater in some urban areas.

“Coordinated prevention efforts by law enforcement, auto manufacturers, insurance companies, and the National Insurance Crime Bureau are having a major impact on vehicle thefts nationwide,” said NICB President and CEO David J. Glawe. “But with several hundreds of thousands of vehicles stolen in a single year, vigilance and prevention efforts remain key to protecting families, businesses and communities nationwide.”
