Each week I bring you the top stories in the auto industry along with my commentary or sometimes amusing thoughts about the craziness that goes on in the world of cars.

893 Tickets Later-Finally Towed. In Washington, D.C., police finally impounded two vehicles tied to massive amounts of unpaid traffic tickets, including one Audi SUV that had accumulated 893 violations totaling more than $260,000. The citations piled up over time, many of them for speeding, with a surprising number issued in just recent months, raising the obvious question of how a driver manages to keep going that long without being stopped. Officials say the seizures are part of a broader effort to crack down on repeat offenders who treat tickets more like suggestions than consequences, particularly those operating across state lines. By the time authorities stepped in, the financial damage had already reached a level that’s hard to comprehend, far exceeding the value of the vehicle itself. The takeaway here is simple: ignoring tickets doesn’t make them disappear, it just turns them into a very expensive problem. It may take a while, but eventually the system catches up, and when it does, it usually comes with a tow truck and a bill that’s impossible to ignore.

When Your Car Gets You Uninvited. A Nebraska car show has taken the unusual step of banning an entire category of vehicles, not because of what they are, but because of how they’ve been driven. Organizers of the Supercar Saturday event in Omaha announced that all Nissan and Infiniti models equipped with the VQ V6 engine are no longer welcome. That includes well-known models like the 350Z, 370Z, and G-series sedans. The decision follows repeated complaints and incidents involving reckless behavior such as burnouts, excessive revving, and at least one crash that nearly injured spectators. Rather than trying to sort out responsible drivers from the troublemakers, organizers chose a blanket ban as the most practical way to maintain a safe, family-friendly environment. The move hasn’t gone over well with owners who follow the rules and now find themselves grouped in with the worst offenders, but event officials say the pattern of behavior left them little choice. The takeaway is straightforward: reputations matter, and when enough people act badly, everyone ends up paying the price. In this case, it’s not about the cars themselves—it’s about what too many drivers decided to do with them.

When Filling Up Becomes a Felony. If you thought fuel prices were getting out of hand, some Florida men found a way to make things a whole lot worse for themselves. Authorities say five men are facing felony charges after allegedly using strong magnets to manipulate diesel fuel pumps, allowing fuel to flow without paying. Investigators say the trick involved placing a magnet on a specific part of the pump to override internal components and bypass the payment system entirely, essentially turning the pump into a free-flow operation. Surveillance footage reportedly showed the group filling multiple semi-trucks, which makes it clear this wasn’t about getting a few gallons to make it home. Officials say schemes like this can cause significant losses for fuel stations, and laws have been tightened specifically to crack down on this kind of tampering. The takeaway is simple: just because something works doesn’t make it smart. There’s a big difference between saving a few dollars at the pump and turning a fill-up into a felony and using a magnet to beat the system is a quick way to trade a fuel stop for a booking photo.

Shaq Sets the Bar… Ridiculously High. Shaquille O’Neal did what most parents can’t even joke about—he bought his son not one, but two vehicles for his 16th birthday, instantly resetting expectations for teenagers everywhere. The gifts reportedly included a customized Lamborghini Gallardo and a modified Jeep Wrangler, both tailored with unique styling that makes the typical “first car” look like a hand-me-down from the neighbor’s kid. And because one over-the-top moment wasn’t enough, the celebration itself was just as big, with a large party that matched the scale of the gifts. To be fair, celebrity parents going big on milestone birthdays isn’t new, but even by those standards, this one stands out. The takeaway is simple: this is what happens when Hall of Fame money meets dad enthusiasm. For the rest of the world, it’s probably best to stick with something more realistic—like a reliable used sedan and a reminder about insurance costs—because handing over two customized vehicles at 16 is a tough act to follow, especially when one of them is a Lamborghini.
