Volkswagen is releasing official EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings for the refreshed 2022 Jetta lineup and they're impressive. The lineup offers a base Jetta model and the more powerful GLI variant. The base model offers up to 43 mpg highway miles when equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission, while the GLI offers 37 mpg highway miles when equipped with the same manual gearbox.
Standard Jetta
2022 Jetta base models now share an engine with the Taos SUV. The 1.5-liter turbocharged and direct-injection EA211 TSI engine features Volkswagen’s modified version of the Miller cycle, where the intake valves are closed early in the induction stroke to help with fuel economy, and has a very high compression ratio of up to 11.5 to one. VW says the upshot is a combination of low-speed torque and competitive fuel economy.
Here's a rundown of the EPA-estimated ratings:
- Base model w/standard six-speed manual transmission:
- 29 mpg city/43 mpg highway/34 mpg combined
- S models equipped w/ optional eight-speed automatic transmission:
- 31 mpg city/41 mpg highway/35 mpg combined.
- SE and SEL models equipped w/optional eight-speed automatic transmission:
- 29 mpg city/40 mpg highway/33 mpg combined.
Jetta GLI
The Jetta GLI model keeps its 2.0-liter EA888 engine. Models equipped with the standard six-speed manual transmission deliver an EPA-estimated rating of 26 mpg city, 37 mpg highway and 30 mpg combined. An optional seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission drops fuel economy to 26 mpg city, 36 mpg highway and 30 mpg combined.
All ratings are based on regular unleaded fuel.
VW says according to the EPA, 2022 Jetta buyers can save as much as $1,500 in fuel over five years compared to the national average new vehicle, while those who choose the GLI can save as much as $500.
