Mecum Auctions Goes Virtual Inside Fortnite

How cool is this for Fortnite players? They can now experience collector car auctions in a completely new way thanks to a partnership between Mecum Auctions and Sunday Car Club. The companies recently announced they are launching what they describe as the first virtual auction experience inside Sunday Car Club’s Fortnite Island, bringing the atmosphere of a live Mecum collector car auction into the gaming world.

Fortnite is one of the most popular online games on the planet, with more than 650 million registered players worldwide. The new collaboration gives those players the chance to participate in virtual Mecum-style auctions, where digital collector vehicles are bought and sold in a setting designed to closely resemble a real Mecum event.

Inside the game, players will see many familiar elements that regular Mecum attendees would recognize immediately. Vehicles cross the auction block on Mecum’s signature red carpet before stopping on a center-stage turntable, where bidding begins. Just like a live auction, players can compete against one another to purchase vehicles, creating a realistic auction environment inside the digital platform.

According to the companies, a Mecum auction event will take place every 30 minutes inside the island’s downtown hub. The auction area will be open to all players regardless of their advancement level in the game. Along with vehicles listed by players themselves, the auction marketplace will also include rare and exclusive models that are available only through the in-game Mecum experience, adding another layer of competition and collectability for gamers and car enthusiasts alike.

The partnership also attempts to mirror the real-world Mecum consignment process. When a player decides to consign a virtual vehicle for auction, an in-game transport sequence is activated. A Mecum Transport truck arrives at the player’s virtual garage and transports the vehicle to the auction stage, recreating the process collectors experience at a live Mecum sale.

Players interested in participating can access the Sunday Car Club island in Fortnite by using code 1338-2425-5585.

Mecum officials say the project is designed to introduce the auction experience to a younger and broader audience than traditional collector car events typically reach.

“We’re taking the Mecum auction experience global in a way we never have before,” said Breeann Poland, Mecum Auctions’ director of marketing and communications, in the company’s announcement. “Bringing it directly to millions of players and future collectors inside one of the world’s biggest platforms.”

The launch coincides with Dana Mecum’s 39th Original Spring Classic in Indianapolis, which started May 8th and runs through May 16 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Mecum says it estimates approximately 2,500 vehicles will cross the live auction block during the nine-day event.

As part of the crossover between the physical and virtual worlds, selected vehicles appearing at the live Indy auction will also become available inside the game during the event. It's a connection that Mecum says is intended to blend real-world collector car culture with digital gaming experiences in a way that has not previously been attempted on this scale.

The move also reflects a growing trend in the automotive world, where manufacturers, racing organizations, and collector car companies are increasingly using gaming platforms to reach younger audiences. For many younger enthusiasts, video games are often their first exposure to performance cars, rare classics, and automotive culture. Mecum appears to be betting that introducing collector car auctions through a gaming environment could help create a future generation of auction attendees and collectors.

Fans who want to experience the real thing can still attend the live Mecum Indianapolis auction in person at the Indiana State Fairgrounds while the virtual experience runs simultaneously online.
