Hyundai, Kia Recall More Vehicles to Address Engine Fire Concerns

Hyundai and Kia are expanding or issuing additional recalls to address engine fires. The automakers announced Thursday that they�ll be recalling another 534,000 vehicles in the U.S. that could be at risk due to issues either with potentially damaged converters or engine leaks.

The largest new recall involves 378,967 Kia Soul vehicles built between 2012-2016. You can read the NHTSA recall document here. In the recall notice, the government says the recall involves vehicles with the 1.6L gasoline direct engines. High exhaust gas temperatures may damage the catalytic converter, possibly resulting in abnormal engine combustion and damage to one or more of the engine's pistons and possible piston connecting rod failure. Additionally, 32,296 Kia Sportage vehicles are also being recalled due to a potential engine pan oil leak that could also damage the engine and cause a stall or fire. Hyundai is recalling 155,000 Tucson vehicles from the 2011-2013 model year for the same issue. The NHTSA says the automakers are still trying to come up with a remedy.
