Ford is expanding its factory-backed theft protection beyond full-size pickups, giving owners of several 2026 SUVs the ability to prevent their vehicle from being started through the Ford app.
The feature, commonly described as a remote “kill switch,” is officially called Start Inhibit and is part of the subscription-based Ford Security Package. Ford’s current eligibility list includes select 2024-and-newer F-150 and Super Duty pickups, along with the 2026 Expedition, 2026 Bronco Sport and 2026 Mustang Mach-E, as reported by The Drive. The F-150 Lightning, F-650 and F-750 are excluded.
Start Inhibit allows an owner to open the Ford app, enter the Monitoring section and slide the control to lock down the vehicle. Once activated, the vehicle cannot be started, even if the person attempting to drive away has an authorized key or key fob. Because the system is integrated into the vehicle and Ford’s connected-services platform, owners do not have to install an aftermarket immobilizer, modify the vehicle’s wiring or depend on a separate third-party device.
There is an important distinction, however: This is not a button that suddenly shuts down a vehicle traveling down the highway. Ford says that if Start Inhibit is activated while the vehicle is already running, it will continue operating until it is turned off. Once shut down, it will not restart until the feature is deactivated.
When Start Inhibit is turned on, the Ford app automatically generates a six-digit, one-time-use deactivation code. That code can be entered inside the vehicle if the owner cannot use the app because of a lost phone, weak cellular service or another connection problem. Owners who lose both access to the phone and the code can contact Ford’s security call center for identity verification and assistance.
Start Inhibit is only one part of the package. Ford Security Package subscribers can also receive push notifications warning of possible intrusion, towing or unauthorized movement, an opened door, a change in the vehicle’s location or an attempt to disable the vehicle’s electronic hardware.
If a vehicle is stolen, Ford’s Stolen Vehicle Services provides access to a live agent who can work directly with law enforcement to help locate and recover it. Owners must first file a police report, then contact Ford through the app or the company’s dedicated stolen-vehicle assistance number. Ford says its agents can share updated vehicle-location information with police and disable the vehicle’s factory-reset function while the case is active.
Eligible new vehicles include one year of Ford Security Package service beginning on the vehicle’s warranty start date, but the owner must activate it through Connected Services in the Ford app. Ford says a credit card is not required for the included year. After that period, the subscription currently starts at $7.99 per month.
Ford also says Start Inhibit-capable vehicles require SYNC 4 software version 2.1.6.4 or later. Some eligible 2024 and 2025 F-Series trucks may therefore need a software update before the feature becomes available.
Ford initially introduced Stolen Vehicle Services on select 2024 F-150s and later added Start Inhibit and expanded the package to Super Duty trucks. At the time, Ford security executive Christian Moran said the company’s long-term vision was to eventually build a vehicle that could not be stolen. Ford has also said modern vehicle theft is increasingly associated with organized and technologically sophisticated criminals rather than someone simply breaking a window and connecting a couple of wires under the dashboard.
The addition of the Expedition, Bronco Sport and Mustang Mach-E represents a meaningful expansion, although Ford’s published eligibility list does not yet include most of the company’s other nameplates.
For owners of an eligible vehicle, the appeal is straightforward: A thief may have copied the key signal, stolen the fob or found the keys sitting inside, but the final answer from the Ford app can still be no.
