At long last, Toyota is taking the wraps off the much-anticipated all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma. The midsize pickup's redesign follows that of the full-size Toyota Tundra back in 2022 and the 2023 Toyota Sequoia last year.

The new Tundra, which made its world debut in Hawaii, is entering its 4th-generation.  Designed for the U.S. market, the new Tacoma is built on the same TNGA-F global truck platform as the new Tundra and Toyota Sequoia.  Highlights include a new high-strength boxed, steel-ladder frame and an available fully redesigned multi-link coil rear suspension for improved ride and handling. Toyota also says its engineering teams enhanced Tacoma’s off-road capability, from severe rock crawling to high-speed desert racing.

Design

The new Tacoma's narrow body and wide upper grille are nods to the original HiLux. Aggressive skid plates convey the Tacoma's extreme ruggedness. Other signature design elements include the high-mount headlamps, side functional air intakes, hexagonal grille motif, as well as integrated roof and tailgate spoilers.

“Our primary design goal for the all-new Tacoma was to be authentic to the way our customers use their trucks for rugged outdoor fun,” says Kevin Hunter, president, CALTY Design Research. “We looked at our truck DNA and the Toyota Baja race trucks for inspiration to capture the extreme spirit of offroad adventure. High lift, big tires, slim body, and a powerful athletic stance define the iconic Tacoma look, referred to as ‘Tacoma-ness’.”

New Powertrains

There are two powertrain options and one of them is a hybrid:

  • A standard i-FORCE turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine produces up to 278 horsepower, 317 lb.-ft. of torque.
  • An available i-FORCE MAX turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain produces 326 horsepower, 465 lb.-ft. of torque.

And great news manual transmission fans, a six-speed manual gearbox with rev matching is available. Manual transmission models produce 270 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque.

Fuel economy numbers haven't been announced yet.
