August 2026 U.S. Auto Sales Recap

Written By: Jerry Reynolds | Sep 7, 2026, 3:17:54 PM

U.S. new-vehicle sales, strictly by the numbers, lost some momentum in August. But an unusual calendar and last year’s rush to purchase electric vehicles made the decline appear worse than the underlying market conditions. Among automakers that continue to report monthly results, Honda, Kia and Subaru posted modest gains, while Toyota, Ford, Hyundai, Mazda and Genesis moved backward.

GlobalData preliminarily estimated that U.S. light-vehicle sales fell 5.6% from August 2025 to approximately 1.4 million cars and trucks. Retail deliveries declined 7.7% to 1.2 million, while fleet shipments rose 7.5% to 219,000. Affordability concerns and weak consumer sentiment continued to restrain demand, and supplies of some popular hybrids remained tight.

August also contained one fewer selling day than a year earlier, and the Labor Day holiday weekend—which traditionally produces heavy showroom traffic—was counted in August results last year but will be included in September this year. The seasonally adjusted annualized sales rate, which accounts for calendar and seasonal differences, reached 16.8 million vehicles, according to Motor Intelligence. That was the strongest pace of 2026 and the highest since April 2025, suggesting the market was healthier than the raw year-over-year decline indicated.

Toyota /Lexus

Toyota Motor North America’s sales fell 4.4% to 215,556 vehicles. The Toyota division declined 4.8%, while Lexus slipped 1.6%. RAV4 sales dropped 19% as Toyota retools plants for the redesigned 2026 model and works through limited supplies. Camry, Tacoma, Grand Highlander and Prius sales also declined, while Corolla and Corolla Cross gained.

Hybrids remained Toyota’s most important bright spot. Toyota and Lexus sold 124,112 electrified vehicles during August, up 20%, with conventional gasoline-electric hybrids accounting for most of that volume. Hybrid versions of the Sequoia, Land Cruiser, 4Runner and Lexus RX all produced double-digit gains.

Ford /Lincoln

Ford Motor Co. sales dropped 10%, with similar declines at Ford and Lincoln. Ford has now posted eight consecutive monthly declines, while Lincoln has fallen for six straight months. Ford attributed much of the weakness to lower electric-vehicle and utility sales, discontinued models and lingering inventory disruptions. Bronco Sport, Ranger, Maverick and Mustang were the only Ford models to record increases. The loss of Escape and Edge are looming large at the Blue Oval automaker.

Honda/Acura

American Honda gained 1% to 133,996 vehicles, marking its fifth consecutive monthly increase. Honda division sales rose 0.4%, while Acura climbed 6.5%. Passenger-car volume increased 7.8%, offsetting a 2% decline among light trucks. Honda-brand hybrid sales reached an August record of 36,776, up 9.2%, led by higher Accord Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid deliveries. American Honda’s official August report also showed strong gains for the Acura Integra, ADX and MDX.

Hyundai/Kia

Hyundai sales declined 1.7% to 86,977 vehicles, ending three consecutive months of gains. Electric-vehicle comparisons were particularly difficult because buyers rushed to claim federal tax credits before they expired in September 2025. August sales of the Ioniq 5 fell 51%, the Ioniq 6 dropped 97% and the Ioniq 9 declined 42%. Hyundai’s conventional hybrid sales, however, jumped 33% and reached a record 29% of the brand’s total volume. Hyundai’s official results showed the Elantra, Santa Fe, Sonata and Tucson were its only models posting August increases.

Kia delivered the strongest performance among the monthly reporters, setting an all-time monthly record with 83,793 vehicles, up nearly 1%. Retail sales also established a record at 77,984. Telluride, Seltos, Sportage, Carnival, K5 and K4 each set August records, while Kia said hybrid sales nearly doubled, rising 99% from a year earlier.

Subaru, Mazda, Genesis

Subaru recorded its fourth consecutive monthly increase, with sales rising 1.3% to 62,028 vehicles. Forester volume climbed 18%, although Subaru remains down 3% for the year. Mazda reported a second straight monthly decline, falling 8.9% to 34,735 vehicles, while Genesis ended a remarkable streak of 22 consecutive monthly gains with sales down 3.7% to 7,635.

Incentives

Automakers and dealers are spending more to keep buyers interested. J.D. Power and GlobalData estimated that the average incentive rose 5.9% to $3,384 per vehicle, equal to 6.6% of the average sticker price. Discounts on gasoline and hybrid vehicles increased 26% to $3,140, while EV incentives remained much higher at $9,228 despite falling 20% from last year.

The unmistakable message from August is that consumers still want more fuel-efficient vehicles—but many are choosing hybrids instead of plugging in. In a softer and increasingly price-sensitive market, hybrids are doing exactly what their name suggests: bridging the gap. We’ll get a full picture after all automakers report sales for the third quarter in early October.
