  • Updated April 2, 2024 to include Acura ZDX, Chevrolet Equinox EV
  • Updated March 12, 2024 to include the Chevrolet Blazer EV
  • Updated March 6, 2024 to include certain Nissan, Cadillac, Honda, Audi and additional VWs
  • Updated January 24, 2024 to add certain VW vehicles.

Earlier this year we shared new, stricter rules for vehicles to qualify for a federal clean vehicle tax credit.  It's meant fewer vehicles qualify but the list is growing from its initial list at the beginning of the year.   Here's a brief look at the changes that went into effect January 1st and an updated list of the qualifying vehicles as of April 2, 2024.

New Tax Credit Rules for 2024

Point of Sale Tax Credits - Good News For Consumers

Effective January 1st, a new rule allows point of sale federal tax credits. This is good news for car buyers as it means they don't have to wait until they file their taxes to get the credit.   They can get the credit at the participating dealership when they buy the vehicle.

Tighter Battery Component Rules Mean Fewer Vehicles Quality

The EV tax credit already had rebate guidelines for batteries sourced and built in America (or in a country with which we have a free trade agreement.)  In 2024, regulations take it to the next level with a new provision that disqualifies any vehicle containing battery components from a so-called “foreign entity of concern” (FEOC). China is considered a FEOC.  The rule expands to battery minerals in 2025.

Updated List Of Eligible Vehicles

Here is an updated list (as of April 2, 2024)of vehicles that qualify for either a full $7,500 or partial $3,750 credit.

On March 6, 2024, Nissan announced that 2024 LEAF vehicles have regained tax credit eligibility and that 2024 LEAF vehicles manufactured in 2024 and sold on or after March 6 may be eligible for part of the U.S. federal EV tax credit (provided that the customer meets all purchase and income requirements.) Initially available to new LEAF customers through December 31, 2023, Nissan says it's been able to recertify that 2024 LEAF vehicles produced in the U.S. in 2024 meet the "battery component" requirements of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 and may now qualify for up to a $3,750 tax credit. The LEAF and its battery are assembled in Smyrna, Tenn.  The exact amount of the credit is not listed on the government website below, so as with all models, check with your dealer for eligibility.
