2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 Limited AWD Review

Written by Amy Plemons | May 30, 2025 2:03:30 PM

Say hello to the new - or rather refreshed and upgraded -  2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5. It arrives with some notable changes. First off- it's now built in the U.S. In fact, it's the first Hyundai to be built at the automaker's new manufacturing plant in Georgia.  It is also the first Hyundai model with a built-in Tesla NACS charging port. There's also a new off-road-oriented XRT trim, but this week I have the well-appointed Limited with all-wheel drive.

Also for reference, the 2025 N performance variant that recently wowed me was built in Korea and did not have the NACS port.

Exterior

The IONIQ 5's stylish and award-winning silhouette shines in a new for 2025 Atlas White Matte paint -  one of three new matte hues introduced this year.

The silver front and rear bumpers get new styling and the Limited rides on new more aerodynamic 20-inch alloys. In back there's also a new rear spoiler. You'll still find pixelated lights on both the front and rear, a hallmark feature of Hyundai EVs.

The Limited also sports premium side sills and gloss black exterior accents.

Performance

Two words: Fantastic acceleration. The IONIQ 5 Limited when equipped with AWD delivers an amazing 320 horsepower even more impressive 446 pound-feet of torque thanks to its dual electric motors. It moves!

Paddle shifters control the regenerative braking - in Auto, Normal or Faster modes.

Interior

I much prefer this test model's two-toned interior - a light hue paired with what Hyundai considers "Dark Green" - than the 2023 model I drove a few years back.

The H-Tex seats are very comfy with more bolstering on the sides than the seat cushion. The front seats are heated and ventilated - and the cooling works great. The cabin features soft-touch door panels,  metallic painted door handles and cloth roof trim.

A redesigned with new Hands-On Detection (HOD) steering wheel features new hardware along with paddle shifters that control regenerative braking. It's also where you still find the drive mode button on the lower left side.  Hyundai uses highly quality hardware throughout.  There are some slight tweaks to the dash a/c vents as well.

The 2025 IONIQ 5's dual 12.3-inch digital displays are fantastic. Both the driver gauge cluster and multimedia navigation touchscreen have great graphics and are very bright and easy to read.  On the driver display, moving objects depict cars around you on the highway.

The multimedia system is compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.  Voice command is fairly natural in delivery, but it didn't seem as quick to respond as I'd like. One feature I really like is the page that breaks down your electricity usage by percentage. The 8-speaker Bose sounds system also sounds great.

Redesigned features also include the center stack climate controls. The sliding center console - or "Universal Island" - gets a completely new look with added functionality. The top portion adds new physical controls for the heated and ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel and parking assist function. Designers also relocated the wireless charging pad so it's much easier to access. A green charging bar also makes it easy to see when it is charging.

Passengers enjoy a roomy second row with heated seats, mesh seat back pockets, a small armrest with cupholders and manual window sunshades.  The panoramic fixed glass roof is one of my favorite features.

Standard features include four USB-C charge ports and one USB-C data port, WiFi Hotspot, dual-zone climate, rain sensing wipers, and ambient interior lighting. It also has a Vehicle To Load 120-Volt outlet in the second row.

A hands-fee power liftgate opens up to spacious cargo area with a cargo cover.

Ride and Drive

Wow does the IONIQ 5 deliver awesome driving dynamics. The acceleration off the line is incredible. AND it's smooth.  Handling is teriffic, too.  I love the level of customization.

You'll get four drive modes, Eco, Sport, Normal and Snow, two steering modes Normal and Sport, and two brake modes,  Normal or Sport. As you'd imagine Sport mode, my favorite,  lends itself to a more responsive and engaging driving experience. You can also adjust the sound of the EV through the Active Sound Design setting.

Range and Charging

The IONIQ 5 Limited with the 20-inch wheels and AWD delivers 269 miles of range. To get to 318 you'll need the rear-wheel drive model.

Again, the 2025 IONIQ 5 has a new built-in Tesla NACS charger.  Hyundai started including the NACS charger on all-new or refreshed Hyundai EVs built in the fourth quarter of Q4. This means you can charge it at a Tesla Supercharger without an adaptor, though all models will be sold with a Combined Charging System (CCS) adapter.

As for the NCAS charging port, housed underneath the power open/close charge port door, it's really not on the correct side in my opinion. The way Superchargers are set up,  it would have been better placed on the driver side. However, Hyundai's original port was on the passenger's side so it was likely logistically much easier to keep it on that side.

Hyundai cites a NACS 10% to 80% DC 400-volt fast-charging time of 30 minutes at 150 KW. Here is the experience I had at a Tesla Supercharger near me:

% time to 100%

The display showed a 32% to 100% charging time of 52 minutes at 127 Kw. From 56% to 100%,  a 39 minute charging time. Another time it showed a 45 minute charge time from 59% to 100% but at a mere 51.9 Kw.

(Note, Hyundai says the CCS adapter delivers the fastest charging. At a 800 volt DC Fast Charging station you'll get 0-80% in 20 minutes.)

Cost Analysis

I recorded the cost to get from 32% to 59% as $14.66 at 127 Kw, in 15 minutes and 36 seconds.

Safety

The Limited is equipped with Hyundai's excellent and extensive suite of driver assistance technology. New for 2025 available features include Lane Following Assist 2, Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 and Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist - Reverse / Forward / Side.

The Limited's Head Up Display graphics are fantastic.  Highway Driving Assist 2 is also excellent - it's really an amazing system and stays within curved lanes on the highway extremely well.

MSRP

Carpeted floor mats ($210) are the only option on my test vehicle, bringing the price tag to just shy over $59,000.
