2024 Genesis GV60 Performance AWD Review

Written by Amy Plemons | Jan 19, 2024 3:13:55 PM

This week I'm behind the wheel of the all-electric 2024 Genesis GV60 Performance AWD - a stylish, sporty coupe-like crossover with impressive performance, innovative technology and a luxurious, jaw-dropping, interior.

Exterior

The sharp, sleek and sporty GV60 definitely garners looks from passerbys.  My test vehicle was awash in attention-grabbing Atacama Copper and statement-making alloy wheels. Genesis calls them 21-inch Medium "Sputtering" wheels. I have zero idea what that means but they are striking and on point.

The GV60's other noteworthy exterior features include its single panel clamshell hood (a first for the brand) and flush electric door handles. Of course both the front and tail end feature Genesis' signature two line lamps.

Up front the Crest Grille is located lower than it would be in an gas engine vehicle  to accommodate cooling EV requirements. In the back you find a wide tail end with a fixed wing spoiler.

Performance

The GV60 Performance AWD's all-electric powertrain consists of 320 kW Dual Motors and a 77.4. Kwh battery. The system delivers 429-horsepower and acceleration feels fantastic to begin with. But a button labeled Boost beckons from the steering wheel.  It will boost power to to 483 horses and 516 pound-feet of torque for 10 seconds. And yes, it's a glorious 10 seconds.

Range

The GV60 Performance AWD has an estimated range of 235 miles on a charge.  Granted this is least amount of range the lineup offers (which offers up to 294), but it's the trade off for the performance all-wheel drive.

One thing I do want to note about range is that I didn't see much of a decrease in range when using the climate control functions.

Interior

There is nothing to be but impressed when you open the door to any Genesis vehicle. These are luxury vehicles that live up to the hype of being luxury vehicles.

The GV60's Ash Gray Glacier White Nappa Leather interior is really breathtaking. A Mircofiber suede headliner is exquisite as well as as the leatherette-wrapped instrument panel.  Elegant aluminum trim exudes luxury. Quality switchgear abounds.

The Ergo Motion Driver's seat is Heaven on earth with a massage function, power cushion extender and side bolsters. Both front seats are heated and ventilated as well. There are seat controls on the site of the passengers seat which is a luxury feature.  The attention to detail is everywhere, even down to trim and switchgear used on the seat controls.

The heated leather-wrapped steering wheel is one of the most luxurious and impeccably crafted steering wheels I've grasped in my days as a car reviewer. On one side of the steering wheel you find a drive mode select - the other the aforementioned BOOST button which amps up performance briefly.

The dash is home to the 12.3-inch touchscreen. Beneath it you'll find the dual zone climate controls on a separate touchscreen.

A show stopper is the Crystal Sphere gear shifter on the floating center console. It's the coolest sphere-gear shift ever.  When the car is turned off, the sphere lights up in the prettiest blue hue. When you turn the car on, it rotates and the Shift By Wire (SBW) gear select appears.  Also on the center stack you'll find an area you can use for handwriting.

Another unique cabin feature: a diffuser inserted in the door handle of the passenger seat. I admit I had to look up what this was,  as it reminded me of a speaker.

The GV60's second row is roomy in terms of legroom, but the stadium seating means you lose a bit of headroom.  The heated Nappa leather seats are just as cushiony back here and passengers will certainly approve of the luxurious surroundings. They include a drop drown center console with cupholders and manual rear sunshades and above, a wonderful panoramic sunroof.  My only surprise back here was the hard surface seat backs, which I expected to be soft-touch material.

Standard interior features include dual zone climate, aluminum door sills, alloy pedals,  a 12-volt and ambient interior lighting.

A smart remote lift gate opens up to a well-appointed cargo area with a cargo cover. The 60/40 split rear seat folds down for more cargo space which I thought impressive for an SUV this size. There is an underfloor storage area, for additional items, Genesis dubs it a "multi-folding luggage board." Speaking of under storage, there is also a small space to store items underneath the clamshell hood.

Charging

Genesis says if you charge at 350KW ultra-speed fast-charging the battery can be charged from 10-80% in 18 minutes.

As for my experience.. Level 1 charging was, as to be expected, SLOW. Level 2 charging at a Volta EV charger at my local mall was a bit better.

For example,  LEVEL 1 charging at 0.7 Kwh will take you more than 46 hours to charge from 55% to 100%.   But using a Level 2 charger,  at 9.4 Kwh you're talking just nearly 3.5 hours to charge from 63% to 100%. So yes. Buy a Level 2 home charger if you buy an EV. (CarPro Show host Jerry Reynolds had one installed and you can read about his experience here.)

As for charging itself, it's super easy to plug in and keep track of your charging status, and also find nearby charging stations. The electric charging door port is cool too and you can open several ways including with the smart key

The GV60 also supports Vehicle to Load charging with multiple inputs of 400V/800V.

Technology

The Genesis' GV60's boasts some incredible tech.  There are two 12.3 inch displays - one for the digital driver display and one for the next-generation multimedia system. Both are fantastic with state of the arts graphics.

Genesis multimedia system is also terrific The touchscreen is responsive and the operating system is fast. It's compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and SiriusXM. Voice command is also superb.  The touchscreen also displays navigation and charging info along with a backup camera and Surround View Monitor with excellent resolution.

Connectivity wise you get a WiFi hotspot and 4 USB-C ports in the cabin as well as a wireless charger.

Other unique and cool tech features include:

Face Connect - a feature that allows the vehicle to recognize the driver's face to lock or unlock its doors without a key.

Fingerprint Authentication -  a feature that allows drivers to start and drive the car without a key.

Ride and Drive

The GV60 Performance is simply a blast to drive. It's sure-footed, quick on its feet, delivers great handling, responsive steering and fantastic off-the-line acceleration. The ride is super smooth too.  You can chose from Eco, Comfort and Sport Drive Modes, but really why would you chose anything but Sport.    And again, BOOST mode is just delightful.

I also love the regenerative braking control paddle shift. It allows you to control the deceleration process which helps with fuel efficiency.

Safety

The GV60 Performance is equipped with HighwayDriving Assist 2 which is an outstanding semi-autonomous system. There's also a really great Head -Up Display.

Other safety features include:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Lane Following Assist
  • Driver Attention Warning
  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Blind-Spot View Monitor
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Parking Distance Warning
  • Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Safe Exit Assist
  • Advanced Rear Occupant Alert

The GV60 also has Remote Smart Parking Assist.  I demo it below:

What You'll Pay

The lineup starts from $52,000 but once you get up to the top of the line model like the Performance AWD you're looking at roughly $71,000.

Verdict

The 2024 Genesis GV60 is a exceptional all-electric small crossover with the luxury, technology and performance guaranteed to impress. The only caveat is its smaller size. If you need something larger I'm a huge fan of the Electrified GV70.
