November 7, 2025

Dear Car Pro Family,

We start today with our annual Salute to Veterans a much deserved tribute to those women and men who have fought for the freedoms that make America the greatest country on earth.  If you know or run across a Veteran, please thank them for their service.

We have some details and a link to a video below from my induction into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame last Saturday.  It was a wonderful event and I am thankful and humbled to you for your help in making this dream come true for me.

Also below, we have the October national sales results for you, an interesting look at which cars people purchase, then get rid of in very short order.  Yikes, over 25% of us are upside down in our car loans by an average of almost $7,000.  It is that time of year, so if you have SiriusXM in your car, Christmas music is already playing, and we have the channel guide for you to make it easier to choose your channel.  Lots of good stuff today for you kids, so go through it all to see what you might be able to use!

Kim Komando has a special report on auto insurance rates and how you can save money, and don’t miss Kim’s Fun Quiz, the answer is at the very bottom of this newsletter, under my closing message.  I have a whole new batch of quirky and funny Quick Shift stories for you today, and don’t forget to go shopping in the Car Pro Merch shop, lots of good stuff there.  Get caught up on the tariff news! In advice, can you trust your car's oil change monitor?

In car reviews, I have a beautiful, large, luxury SUV for you, the 2026 Infiniti QX80 Sport. Amy Plemons gives you an in-depth look at the 2026 Genesis GV80 Coupe. If you are not used to going all the way to the bottom of the newsletter, I have a closing message every single week that I think is worthy of your reading.  Today, I talk about GM’s plan for “eyes-off” driving in just a couple of years.  Is this a good idea and do people really want it?

If you have never read my True Stories from a Former Car Dealer series, may I suggest you do so.  People have loved this for a lot of years now.  You’ll learn more about me than you probably want to know, you’ll roar with laughter at some, and you’ll likely get a tear in your eyes on others.  They are all right here, 40 of them, carefully written by yours truly.

If you haven’t perused my FAQ page, please do.  There are likely multiple articles you can use, every one of them written by me.

All of our other regular features are below including the Classic Car Contest, our radio station listings, how to connect with us on Facebook and call the show to talk directly to me, and much, much, more.

We very much appreciate you being part of the newsletter family.  Without you, there is no Car Pro Show.  Let us know how we can help you, and if you haven’t been to our website lately, check it out at CarPro.com. It changes daily.

Have a terrific week.  See you on the radio!

  Our Annual Salute To Veterans

thank-you-veterans-shutterstock-377314879

I hope every Veteran has a great day this Tuesday, November 11. In honor of all who have served in our Armed Forces, and those who serve today, we offer this Tribute to Veterans, and say thank you for your service to America from all of us at the Car Pro Show…

  • It is the VETERAN not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.
  • It is the VETERAN not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.
  • It is the VETERAN not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
  • It is the VETERAN not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.
  • It is the VETERAN not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.
  • It is the VETERAN not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.
  • It is the VETERAN who salutes the Flag,
  • It is the VETERAN who serves under the Flag.

ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD, AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.  May God Bless them all!

**We offer this poem to all who have served and are currently serving**

Let's honor our military,
The men and women who serve,
Whose dedication to our country
Does not falter, halt or swerve.

Let's respect them for their courage;
They're ready to do what's right
To keep America safe,
So we can sleep better at night.

Let's support and defend our soldiers,
Whose hardships are brutal and cruel,
Whose discipline we can't imagine,
Who follow each order and rule.

Here's to those who choose to be warriors
And their helpers good and true;
They're fighting for American values;
They're fighting for me and you.

Finally, a listener sent me this very moving video.  I would encourage you to spend a few minutes watching, it really brings it into perspective.

2025 Texas Radio Hall of Fame Induction!

2025-radio-hall-of-fame-1

This past weekend a dream of mine came true. I was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame on Saturday, November 1st, alongside this distinguished group of industry peers. What an honor it was! I also follow in the footsteps of my forever Trusty Sidekick Kevin McCarthy who was inducted back in 2002.

Listeners, I thank you for being part of this incredible journey. I am humbled to be an inductee into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.  It is pretty rare that weekend hosts ever get this honor. There have been so many great names in radio inducted in years past, so this makes it even more special.  I am incredibly appreciative to the listeners of the Car Pro Show who supported me and voted, and those who have listened to the show for the past 24 years.  It is an honor to come into your homes, cars, and electronic devices every week.  I fully realize none of this would be possible without you, and that is something I'll never take for granted.  I will continue to bring you straight talk and honest answers about everything automotive making sure you have the best possible information when it comes to buying a car.

A Law Everyone Needs To Know About

nhtsa-Move over-laws-credit-nhtsa

“Slow Down, Move Over" laws exist in all 50 states. But a new study finds confusion over the laws and inconsistent enforcement are leaving responders at continued risk.  This is a topic that's very personal to me, given the death of my friend Garland Police Officer Ronnie Lerma in 1998. He was killed after stopping a vehicle for speeding on a North Texas highway. Please obey “Slow Down, Move Over" laws that exist to protect First Responders and others like tow truck operators who are helping motorists on the roadside. In Texas, as of September 1, 2025, the law also now includes Animal Control Officers.

I share more about Ronnie here, plus see map of State Move Over Laws

Kim Komando's Quiz & Special Report

new-kim-kommando-graphiBesides the Car Pro Show and our weekly newsletter, my other favorite radio show and newsletter is Kim Komando’s.  We're on many of the same radio stations across America.  She does for her listeners and newsletter subscribers exactly what I endeavor to do:  Give you useful information to keep you up to date on the latest in cars, only she does it with technology and there is nobody who does it better.  Not sure how she puts out a top-notch newsletter seven days a week, but she does.

Kim’s Quiz:

Let’s dive into CAPTCHAs. You know, those “click all the squares with a crosswalk” tests that make you feel both 100% human and completely defeated all at once? What if I told you those anti-robot puzzles were secretly recruiting you as an unpaid digital worker? Yep, surprise!

So, what do you think early CAPTCHAs were helping Google do behind the scenes? A) Train self-driving cars, B) Digitize old books, C) Map satellite images, or D) Translate foreign languages? Take a wild guess, the answer awaits you at the end.

The answer is under my closing message at the bottom.

🚨 Kim's Special Report On Rising Car Insurance Costs

Rising car insurance premiums are impacting a lot of drivers out there, Kim Komando among them. On her website, she shares that hers went up 32%!  Read her special report on rising insurance costs and what you can do about it.

My Must-See Video Of The Week!

Oh wow, just when you thought you’d seen every kind of police chase.  In this one, we have a Michigan police officer's view from his dashcam as he pursues a stolen ambulance that has a patient AND a paramedic in the back.  Tough position to be in, he can’t do a pit maneuver this time.  It does come to an end when the ambulance wrecks out, but according to the radio transmission, the patient and paramedic were OK, and you’ll see the perp taken down, HARD.

GM Says Look Away, I'm Not So Sure

Screen Shot 2025-10-02 at 12.33.43 PMWhen General Motors announced that it plans to deliver “eyes-off” driving by 2028, the headlines came fast: “Hands-free, eyes-free, worry-free.” But I keep coming back to a simple question—do people really want this?  I’ve asked many car dealers if people walk in and ask for a fully autonomous car, and without exception, they have all told me “not a one”.  GM has been pumping billions of dollars into this, and I’m sure there will be billions more spent.  Keep in mind, too, that General Motors also said all the vehicles they build will be electric by 2030, remember that?

Sure, there’s a certain appeal. The Monday-morning slog through traffic, the long highway stretch when your brain checks out before you do—yeah, we’ve all been there. GM’s promise of a car that lets you look away, even read a text or glance at your kids in the back seat, sounds like something from The Jetsons. But just because we can doesn’t mean we should.

I’ve been around cars long enough to know that every great leap forward has a price tag and a “what if.” What happens when this “eyes-off” system decides it’s time to take a nap? If it fails, does the driver even know soon enough to take control? And beyond safety, what happens when the warranty runs out? If the radar, lidar, or camera array that runs the show goes down, you’re not fixing that with a socket set and a weekend of patience. Are we talking a few thousand dollars, or does the vehicle become a very expensive paperweight that can’t legally drive itself—or you—anywhere?

The average owner keeps a vehicle nearly twelve years these days. That means a 2028 “eyes-off” Cadillac could still be on the road in 2040, long after the software has aged out, the tech support line’s gone dark, and the parts are as scarce as carburetors. Who’s going to maintain the autonomy once the OTA updates stop coming? There’s a good chance your eyes-off Cadillac becomes a “take-it-to-CarMax-and-hope-they-don’t-notice” Cadillac.

Don’t get me wrong—I’m not anti-technology. I’ve driven most of these systems. GM’s Super Cruise works beautifully when it works.Tesla’s Autopilot has moments of brilliance, although there is an alarming number of deaths attributed to Tesla owners who took their “eyes-off” the road and trusted the system. Ford’s BlueCruise can make a long trip less tiring. But there’s a difference between using technology to assist the driver and replacing the driver entirely. Hands-free is convenience. Eyes-off is giving up the wheel, and that is uncomfortable for me.

Moreover, as I review cars with screens that run from one side of the car to the other, I wonder what happens when those screens burn out?  With some of them, you can’t change your radio or change any of the settings on your car.  Do the screens have to be replaced and if so, how much is that?

Driving isn’t just about getting there—it’s about the connection between human and machine. It’s one of the last analog joys we have. You can’t replicate that feeling with a progress bar and a legal disclaimer. And I can’t shake the feeling that when we finally perfect the car that doesn’t need us, we might discover we’ve built something we don’t actually want to own.

Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I like knowing that if something breaks, I can fix it—or at least find somebody who can. I like feeling the steering wheel, not watching the steering wheel move itself. And if that makes me the automotive equivalent of a guy still holding onto his landline, I’m okay with that.

In the end, I think there’s a middle road here. Let technology handle the drudgery, sure. But let’s not let it take away the part that still feels human. Because if we give up driving completely, we may just find ourselves passengers in more ways than one.

So, do people really want “eyes-off” driving? Some will. Many won’t. But the day we stop asking that question—and just accept whatever’s handed to us—is the day we truly stop driving.

And I, for one, would like to keep my hands, my eyes, and my heart firmly on the road.

Kim Komando Answer:

B) Digitize old books. Yep, turns out those squiggly word CAPTCHAs were part of a secret mission called reCAPTCHA, where Google used your eyeballs to help turn dusty scanned pages into searchable digital archives. So be proud, I guess.

Fun fact: reCAPTCHA helped digitize the entire archive of The New York Times. That’s over 150 years of news, headlines and hot takes before Twitter.

Maybe it’s me, but if robots can’t identify stop signs or traffic lights in CAPTCHA images, maybe self-driving cars are a bad idea.
