Dear CarPro Family,

Here’s hoping you and yours have a safe and wonderful Memorial Day weekend.  Yes, we’ll be on the air this week helping people get some great pre-tariff deals on new cars.  I explain everything below.  As always, we have our Salute to Fallen Veterans who paid the ultimate price for me and you, please take a look.  Too many people don’t understand Monday is for those who died in service, not those who served-that’s Veteran’s Day.

45 million of you will be traveling this weekend and I have some tips for that below.  Cross your fingers, looks like the annoying start/stop system in cars could be going away.  I have the 10 best new budget cars for you today, the latest on the tariffs, and major factors that determine your insurance premiums.  In Quick Shifts, she wanted a Toyota but got a Yoda, Scratch-off shenanigans at a car dealership, The Wienie 500: A Frankly Unbelievable Race Day, and a Texas man invented a new way to tow that didn’t work out very well, and I have video proof of it!

In car reviews, I had a really good week with the 2025 Audi RS e-tron GT Performance with 912 horses, and another hot rod, the 2025 Nissan Z NISMO. Our Amy Plemons gives you a full and complete review of the 2025 Volvo V60 Cross Country B5 AWD.   In advice, I'll tell you how to avoid 8 common car buying mistakes and I tell you below about Jeep renting Wrangler plug-in hybrids through Hertz!

Plus, lots of other information you will likely enjoy, including my video of the week which is always one of the most clicked on items in the newsletter.  If you haven’t perused my FAQ page, please do.  There are likely multiple articles you can use, every one of them written by me.

Check the recall section to see if you may need to take action on your vehicle.  Miss a radio show?  Below we tell you how to get the podcast, and if you missed a newsletter, we tell you how to find the archive page where you can see the last 10 editions.  The incentives have gone up lately, but our Incentive Guide is always 100% up to date.

Screen Shot 2025-05-21 at 4.39.27 PM

We very much appreciate you being part of the newsletter family.  Without you, there is no Car Pro Show.  Let us know how we can help you, and if you haven’t been to our website lately, check it out at CarPro.com. It changes daily.

Have a terrific week.  See you on the radio!

BREAKING NEWS: CA Ban on Gas Vehicles Killed

san-francisc0-bay-area-traffic

Earlier today (May 22, 2025), the U.S. Senate passed House Joint Resolution 88 (H.J.Res. 88) with a 51–44 vote, following the House's approval on May 1, 2025, by a 246–164 margin. The resolution nullifies the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) waiver granted to California for its Advanced Clean Cars II (ACC II) program, which aimed to mandate that all new passenger vehicles sold in the state be zero-emission by 2035. This program had been adopted by 11 other states, including New York.

The passage of H.J.Res. 88 under the Congressional Review Act (CRA) marks a significant shift in federal environmental policy. By revoking California's waiver, the resolution prevents the state and others from implementing stricter vehicle emissions standards than those set federally. This action underscores the ongoing debate over state versus federal authority in setting environmental regulations.

The resolution now awaits the President's signature to become law. If signed, and it is almost a certainty it will be, the law will effectively block California and other states from enforcing bans on new gasoline-powered vehicle sales by 2035, altering the trajectory of U.S. climate and transportation policy.

  Our Salute To Fallen Veterans

honoring all who served

The Car Pro Show joins the nation in observing Memorial Day this coming Monday. The national holiday dates back nearly 150 years. Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country. For more on the history of Memorial Day, click here.

Please remember that Memorial Day is not about being off work or picnics. It is a day to remember those who died serving our country.  So, in honor of them, keep these things in mind.

The Silent March

They do not march in parades today,
Nor stand where flags in sunlight sway.
Their names are etched in granite stone,
Their stories whispered, not well known.

They gave their youth, their breath, their all,
To heed a duty’s hallowed call.
From Flanders fields to desert sand,
They served with heart, with soul, with hand.

No drumroll sounds, no bugle cries,
But in our hearts their valor lies.
Each freedom we so freely claim
Is signed and sealed with their brave name.

So, on this day, we bow our head,
And honor all the nation’s dead.
Not just with wreath or fleeting cheer,
But with the silence they held dear.

For liberty is not by chance,
It’s earned in fields where soldiers dance
A final waltz with fate and flame—
And never come back home the same.

We live because of what they gave—
So plant the flag and tend the grave.
Remember them, and humbly say:
We owe it all this Memorial Day.

A listener sent me this very moving video. I would encourage you to spend a few minutes watching, it really brings it into perspective.  It is called Mansions of the Lord. VIDEO →

Finally we offer this poem to all who have served, and our thanks, also to those who are currently serving

HUGE Memorial Day Weekend Sales - Even With Tariffs

great-deals-ahead-shutterstock-1404x1112-1I am constantly asked when is the best time to buy.  I always say Memorial weekend and the last week of December.  It is no different this weekend even with the tariffs looming.  Our dealers will still be trying to beat their competitors and meet the objectives they’ve been given by their respective manufacturer.  There are still plenty of new vehicles sitting on the lots that came in before tariffs take effect, and the incentives are shockingly good right now, but there will be no reason for those in June, unless some serious trade agreements are signed really soon.

I anticipate our dealers will be very busy with Memorial weekend AND the end of the month falling five days later.

Many of our dealers have a lot more vehicles on the way at the old pricing, too.  Remember, if you are looking for a specific vehicle at a CarPro dealer, website inventory is never 100% accurate.  You’ll find vehicles online that are sold, and vehicles in stock that are not on the website.  This is particularly true with Toyota dealers.

The used market is going up every week. Your trade-in is worth more today that it was just a few weeks ago, no matter the year, make, model, or mileage.  If you tried to trade your car earlier in the year, try again, the picture looks very different today.

I will repeat this:  If you were going to buy a car later this year, look at numbers NOW.  Depending on what happens with the tariffs, this could be your last chance to get a pre-tariff priced car that still has good incentives.

Use our dealers from here, email them in advance so they can be ready for you:

Here is a helpful tutorial for finding the nearest CarPro Certified Dealer to you, and how to search for a specific vehicle at one of our Certified Dealerships:

If you’ve put this off waiting for that right time to pull the trigger, I submit that time is NOW.

No earth-shattering headlines on the tariffs this week, no new deals struck with any of the countries that supply vehicles to U.S. consumers, but here are the items that caught my attention since we talked a week ago, including Subaru's decision to raise prices on several models including the Forester.

Kim Komando's Useful Tips of the Week

new-kim-kommando-graphiBesides the Car Pro Show and our weekly newsletter, my other favorite radio show and newsletter is Kim Komando’s.  We're on many of the same radio stations across America.  She does for her listeners and newsletter subscribers exactly what I endeavor to do:  Give you useful information to keep you up to date on the latest in cars, only she does it with technology and there is nobody who does it better.  Not sure how she puts out a top-notch newsletter seven days a week, but she does.

Here are some interesting things I found this week in Kim’s Newsletter:

Note from the Car Pro:  A dollar here, a dollar there: It seems like every subscription is more expensive than when I signed up. Use the Rocket Money app to see what you’re paying for. I do! They’ll even cancel a subscription for you if it’s not worth the money anymore.  They have saved me serious money doing what I always wanted to do but couldn’t find the time.  I learned this from Kim!

  • A future without iPhones? Apple says we may not need smartphones at all in 10 years. With AI changing how we interact with tech, Apple is betting on lightweight AR glasses you can wear all day instead. Pretty wild, considering iPhones still make up around 50% of the company’s revenue.
  • Romance scams continue: A retired Texas man fell for an online “romance,” and then “she” convinced him to dump his 401(k) into crypto. Spoiler: It was all fake, complete with a site showing his money “grow.” Now, he’s out $500K, his house is up for sale, and he’s job hunting. Love hurts, but that’s next level.
  • Jeff Bezos’ prime day: Rumor has it the tech billionaire is tying the knot on a Venetian island in an open-air theater. As for entertainment? Oh, just Elton John and Lady Gaga, nothing too extravagant. And the guest list? Think Kardashians, Katy Perry, Leonardo DiCaprio and maybe President Trump. Yeah, subtle isn’t really his thing. I am still waiting for my invite.
  • Mute yourself: When you call customer service and hear, “This call may be recorded,” it’s not just while you’re talking with a rep. They can hear everything, even when you’re on hold. So hit that mute button next time you want to vent your frustrations.

Jerry's Must-See Video Of The Week!

In this two minute video, earlier this month a guy hauling junk in a trailer loses a big part of his load on an Arkansas freeway.  Cars dodge the debris until somebody who isn’t paying attention in what appears to be a Mazda Miata hits the debris and has a collision with an 18-wheeler.  Want to bet the Mazda driver was looking at their phone?  The good news, the Highway Patrol got there in time to help the guy that lost his load safely get everything loaded back up before there were any more wrecks, but you’ll see there were a lot of close calls!
