Dear Car Pro Family,

25 years ago this morning, the world changed. As the morning unfolded, we found out the unimaginable happened. America was under attack. At home. This edition of the Car Pro newsletter is largely dedicated to the horrific events of 9/11/01.

We start with my thoughts on the fact that those of us who remember that day swore we’d never forget it. Sadly, it seems like we have in many cases. We follow that with a new song I did, which I’ve worked on for a long time for this day, it’s titled: We Promised We’d Never Forget. As always, feel free to share any of my music anywhere you wish, the more people who hear it, the better. After that, I would like for you to scroll through the names of the 2,977 who died 25 years ago this morning. It is sobering to see especially when you think of how many people the victims touched in their daily lives.

The theme continues with my weekly advice column. It occurred to me that many people who lost their loved ones suddenly had cars that didn’t know what to do with. So, my advice column is titled: When Someone You Love Leaves A Car Behind. My closing message today is: The Cars That Never Came Home.

Just a quick note of thanks for all who reached out and told me how much they loved my tribute song to Dolly Parton. Of the songs I’ve shared, this was by far the most listened to, although I hope today’s goes even farther.

  September 11, 2001: We Promised We'd Never Forget

Twenty-five years ago this morning, America awakened to a beautiful September day. The sky over New York City was an unforgettable blue. People went to work, boarded airplanes, dropped children off at school, kissed spouses goodbye and hurried through lives they assumed would continue exactly as planned.

Then, at 8:46 Eastern time, everything changed.

By the end of September 11, 2001, terrorists had murdered 2,977 innocent people at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Thousands more were injured. Families were shattered. Children lost parents, parents lost children, and husbands and wives heard final “I love yous” from people who knew they were probably not coming home.

America lost something that day that we have never completely recovered.

I remember exactly where I was.

I was serving as chairman of the Ford National Dealer Council and had flown to Midland, Texas, to meet with Ford dealers from across West Texas. That morning, I turned on Good Morning America in my hotel room and saw smoke pouring from one of the World Trade Center towers. At first, everyone thought a small airplane might have accidentally struck the building.

Then I watched the second plane hit.

At that moment, I knew it was no accident. America was under attack.

I went downstairs for the dealer meeting, but nobody in that room could concentrate on dealership problems. I called the meeting to order, looked into the worried faces of 30 or 35 people and tried to begin. Five minutes later, I stopped.

“There are more important things going on than this,” I told them. “Go be with your families. This can wait.”

That was all any of us wanted—to get home.

Every airplane in America had been grounded, leaving me 350 miles from Dallas. Three Ford representatives and I piled into a rented Mercury Grand Marquis and started driving. In our confusion, we initially headed toward El Paso instead of Dallas, which added another hour to a trip that already seemed endless.

What I remember most was the silence in the sky. No airplanes. Very few cars. Just four stunned men listening to the radio and trying to understand what was happening to our country.

When I finally reached my dealership that afternoon, there was not a customer in the building. I told my managers to close early and went home to my family, exhausted and uncertain about what tomorrow would bring.

Millions of Americans have their own September 11 story. They remember the office where they were working, the classroom where a teacher turned on a television, the phone call from a spouse or the moment someone told them to come look at the news. Those memories are now a quarter-century old, but for those of us who lived through that day, they have never completely faded.

Something remarkable happened in the days that followed. American flags appeared everywhere—on homes, businesses, bridges, overpasses and vehicles. People stood in line for hours to donate blood. Churches filled. Strangers checked on strangers. We thanked police officers, firefighters, paramedics and members of our military. Political differences that had seemed so important on September 10 suddenly did not matter very much.

For a while, we remembered that before we were Republicans or Democrats, conservatives or liberals, Northerners or Southerners, we were Americans.

I wish we could have held on to more of that.

We said we would never forget, and I believe most of us sincerely meant it. Yet forgetting does not always mean losing the memory of an event. Sometimes it means remembering what happened but forgetting what it taught us.

“Never forget” is more than recalling the sight of the burning towers. It is remembering the office workers who helped co-workers down smoke-filled stairwells. It is remembering the passengers aboard Flight 93 who knew what had happened in New York and Washington and chose to fight back. It is remembering the firefighters climbing upward while everyone else was trying to get out. It is remembering police officers, paramedics, military personnel and countless ordinary Americans who ran toward danger because somebody needed them.

It is remembering the families who have lived with an empty chair at the table for 25 years.

A year after the attacks, while I was still in the automobile business, I ran a full-page newspaper message honoring those I called America’s true heroes. It was not an advertisement for a vehicle or a dealership sale. It was a plea to fly the flag, support our first responders, help someone in need and hold our families a little closer.

The final thought was simple: “Don’t wait until later becomes too late.”

Twenty-four years after writing those words, I believe them more strongly than ever.

If there is someone you love, tell them. If there is someone you need to forgive, do it. Thank a police officer, firefighter, paramedic, service member or veteran. Help a neighbor. Call an old friend. Fly the American flag today—and leave it flying tomorrow.

Most importantly, tell the story of September 11 to someone who is too young to remember it. An entire generation of Americans has now grown up knowing 9/11 only as history. They did not watch it happen. They did not experience the fear, the heartbreak or the extraordinary unity that followed. If they are going to understand what “never forget” truly means, those of us who remember must teach them.

For nearly a quarter-century, I have played the audio tribute you will find below on the Car Pro Show. It begins before the first airplane struck and follows the events of that terrible morning, narrated by my longtime Trusty Sidekick, the great Kevin McCarthy and me. It ends with a recording of me teaching my then-three-year-old nephew Connor the Pledge of Allegiance, accompanied by the incomparable Lee Greenwood.

That little boy’s voice may be the most important part of the entire tribute because remembrance is not inherited automatically. It has to be passed from one generation to the next.

Please do not merely let this recording play in the background. Listen to it. Share it with your children or grandchildren. Remember the lives that were stolen, the heroes who emerged and the country we briefly became.

We cannot return to September 10, 2001, and we would never want to relive September 11. But perhaps we can recover something of September 12—the unity, gratitude, courage and unmistakable love of country that reminded us who we were.

Twenty-five years ago, we promised the victims, their families and one another that we would never forget.

As I worked on this special 25th-anniversary newsletter, I wanted to create something that honored not only the 2,977 lives taken on September 11, 2001, but also the extraordinary courage revealed that day and the way our country came together afterward. The result is a song I wrote and produced called “We Promised We’d Never Forget.” It remembers the people who left home that morning and never returned, the heroes who ran toward danger while others were trying to escape, and the ordinary Americans who reminded us what courage and sacrifice truly look like. 

Most of all, it is about the promise we made as a nation 25 years ago—a promise that becomes meaningless unless each new generation understands what happened, whom we lost and how America responded.  True Stories From A Former Car Dealer 

This is #29 in a series of 40 stories written by me about occurrences from my days in the car business. Each story had a lasting impression on me for some reason or another. Some because they were funny, some because they were sad, and some were just strange. But whatever the case, over the next 10 weeks, we’ll feature one of them, in order for you to enjoy.

It was extremely controversial with the Ford dealers I represented, but we dug in and revamped it to become too much of a success. Along the way, I got beat up badly by many of my fellow Ford dealers.

I have spent most of my life around cars. I have bought them, sold them, appraised them, driven them, talked about them on the radio and written about them for more years than I care to admit. To me, a car has always represented movement. It takes us to work, brings us home, carries our children and gives us the freedom to go where we choose. But after September 11, 2001, some cars came to represent something entirely different.

In the days following the attacks, cars remained in commuter parking lots in New Jersey. Their owners had driven there on Tuesday morning, parked, locked the doors and continued into New York, never imagining they would not return. As the hours became days and the days became weeks, most of the other vehicles disappeared. These did not. NJ Transit later described the abandoned cars that remained in station parking lots for weeks as a sad reminder of the people who were not coming home.

Think about how ordinary that morning must have begun. An alarm clock rang. Coffee was poured. Someone hurried out the door, perhaps already thinking about a meeting, a deadline or what needed to be picked up on the way home. They pulled into a familiar parking space, turned off the ignition and walked away. Nothing about that moment announced itself as important. It was simply the beginning of another workday.

We know now that it was not.

I cannot stop thinking about those cars sitting there as darkness fell on September 11. Perhaps they were still warm when the towers came down. By that evening, families everywhere were calling cellphones, hospitals, police departments and anyone who might have seen the person they loved. Meanwhile, the cars waited exactly where they had been left, holding no answers and offering no comfort.

There is something reassuring about the sound of a familiar car arriving home. You recognize the headlights through the window, the engine in the driveway or the garage door beginning to rise. You know who it is before the person walks through the door. It is such an ordinary part of family life that we barely notice it—until it does not happen. On that Tuesday night, thousands of families listened for sounds that never came.

A parked car is among the most ordinary sights in America, but those cars became silent memorials before monuments had been designed and before the names of the dead had been carved in stone. Every one of them represented an empty chair, an unanswered telephone and a front door that would not open. Behind every steering wheel was the absence of someone who had fully expected to make the drive home.

That is what the number 2,977 can never adequately tell us. A number measures the size of a tragedy, but it cannot measure the empty place left in a family. It cannot tell us how many children waited to hear a parent’s key in the door, how many spouses looked through a window when headlights turned onto the street, or how many families would never again hear the familiar sound of a garage door rising at the end of the day.

I have often said that cars become part of our family histories. We remember the one in which we brought a baby home, taught a teenager to drive or took a favorite vacation. Years after a car is gone, one photograph can bring back the person who sat behind its wheel. Perhaps that is why those vehicles affect me so deeply. They were not wrecked or destroyed. They were simply left waiting, looking exactly as they had when their owners expected to return in a few hours.

Eventually, those cars had to be removed. I think about the people who faced that task, especially the family members who may have received a set of keys to a vehicle whose owner no longer needed them. I do not know the individual story of each car, and I would not pretend to. But I can imagine how difficult it must have been to open that door, sit in that familiar seat and see everything exactly where a loved one had left it on the morning the world changed.

For 25 years, we have said we would never forget September 11. Remembering the towers, the Pentagon, Flight 93 and the heroes is essential. But remembering also means seeing the smaller, quieter evidence of what was lost. It means understanding that the victims were not merely names or numbers. They were people in the middle of ordinary lives, expected at meetings, school pickups, dinner tables and homes where somebody was waiting.

The cars eventually left those parking lots. The people who parked them never came home.

May we never forget that behind every one of those 2,977 names was someone expected at a destination—and someone waiting there with love.
