Which States Drive The Most AND Fewest Pickups

Written by CarPro | Jul 6, 2022 12:41:48 AM

I know you were thinking Texas would top the list, but guess what?  It didn’t even make the top 20.  This was a surprise to me, too, being a native Texan.  Our friends at www.iSeeCars.com did the research and the results were surprising. - Jerry Reynolds

America sure loves its pickup trucks.  Case in point, the Ford F-Series was the number one selling vehicle in the U.S. for the 40th straight year in 2021.  Trucks were also the top three best-selling new and used vehicles in 2021, according to iSeeCars.

iSeeCars researchers report that trucks account for 16.6 percent of all vehicles on U.S. roads. So where are they the most popular?  Its researchers recently set out to answer that question, ranking states by their share of light-duty pickup trucks.

One thing you'll notice right away is that top 10 states with the highest share of pickup trucks have something in common - they are all mountainous states.

Here are some of the interesting takeaways:

  • Wyoming, known as the "Cowboy State" takes the honors as the state with the most pickup trucks -- with 2.3 more pickup trucks on the road than the average state.
  • Texas, which leads the nation in pickup truck sales volume, ranks 25th in the nation for the state’s total vehicle share.
  • And California? It ranks even lower than Texas coming in at 46.
  • The state with the lowest share? New Jersey, at 8.0 percent,  half the national average.
  • Overall you'll find fewer pickups in states that are flat, like Florida, Illinois, and Delaware.
  • When it comes to the 10 states with the lowest shares of pickup trucks, all but Illinois are coastal states.

About the Study

iSeeCars.com says it analyzed over 1.9 million used car sales from June 2021 through May 2022. The shares of trucks, suvs, passenger cars (defined as sedans, coupes, convertibles, hatchbacks, and wagons), and minivans within each US state were calculated and used as ranking metrics across states.
