Report: Shopping Your Auto Loan Could Save You Big Money

Car shoppers will compare trim levels, debate paint colors and negotiate the price, but the financing deserves just as much attention. A new LendingTree analysis estimates that borrowers could save an average of $3,064 over the life of an auto loan by choosing their lowest annual percentage rate offer instead of their highest. That is a substantial reward for giving the loan some of the attention usually reserved for the vehicle.

For its study, updated Oct. 12, LendingTree examined auto loan offers made through its platform in July 2026 and compared them with July 2025. Researchers identified each borrower’s lowest and highest APR offers, then calculated averages overall and across four credit groups. The findings describe potential savings based on offers and estimated payments, rather than money borrowers actually saved after taking out loans.

The average lowest APR was 11.91%, compared with 15.05% for the average highest offer, a difference of 3.14 percentage points. Using an average loan amount of $26,706 and an average term of 68.1 months, LendingTree estimated monthly payments of $541 at the lower APR and $586 at the higher one.

A $45 monthly difference might not sound like a major bargaining victory, but those payments continue for more than five years. LendingTree’s calculations put the total difference at $3,064. The published payments are rounded, so multiplying the displayed monthly savings by the displayed term will not reproduce the estimate exactly.

The opportunity to save grew even though both average APRs declined from a year earlier. The lowest offers fell faster than the highest, widening the gap between them. Estimated savings increased by $715, or 30.4%, from July 2025 to July 2026. In other words, a general decline in borrowing rates did not eliminate the value of comparing lenders.

Borrowers in LendingTree’s near-prime category, with credit scores from 620 to 659, had the largest estimated savings: $4,259 over their average offered loan term. Their average lowest APR was 12.12%, while the average highest was 16.69%, a spread of 4.57 percentage points.

The benefit extended across every credit group. Estimated savings were $2,966 for borrowers with scores below 620, $2,970 for those scoring 660 to 719 and $2,167 for those at 720 or higher. These estimates use each group’s own average loan amount and term, so they do not represent identical loans. Even borrowers in the highest credit category had a meaningful reason to compare offers.

There is also an important distinction between these figures and the rate an individual buyer should expect. LendingTree says its averages reflect the borrowers and vehicles on its marketplace, including differences in credit profiles and whether the vehicles were new or used. The study is not a promise that every shopper can obtain its lowest average APR or save the same amount.

LendingTree chief consumer finance analyst Matt Schulz recommends checking your credit, establishing a realistic budget and obtaining multiple preapprovals before visiting the dealership. Those offers provide a benchmark and give the dealership an opportunity to compete for the financing business.

Schulz also advises comparing the APR, amount financed, loan length and total cost, rather than judging an offer solely by its monthly payment. A longer repayment period can make the payment easier to handle while increasing total interest expense. Shopping carefully means looking at the whole agreement, because the vehicle’s selling price is only part of what you will ultimately pay to put it in your driveway.
