I did a segment on the Fox News in Houston Monday morning on this recall and you can see it here:

Here are the details of the recall we provided last week.

A NHTSA consumer alert for Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride owners. The automakers are recalling 281,447 SUVs for fire risk. The automakers have also issued a park outside warning and the NHTSA has issued a stop-sale order for unsold vehicles on dealer lots.

The recalls involve 245,030 Model Year 2020-2022 Hyundai Palisade vehicles (NHTSA ID: 22V-633) and 36,417 Model Year 2020-2022 Kia Telluride vehicles (NHTSA ID: 22V-626).

Most of the recalled vehicles (245,030) are Palisades, as per documents: "To identify all vehicles equipped with potentially affected tow hitch wiring harnesses, all model year 2020-2022 Palisade vehicles sold in the U.S. are expected to be involved in this recall."

At the root of the issue is an accessory tow hitch sold through dealerships. The NHTSA says it may allow moisture into the harness module, causing a short circuit.  It's a vehicle fire risk - while driving or even while parked and turned off.

The Park Outside warning advises owners to park their cars outside and away from homes and other structures until their vehicles have been repaired, due to new recalls for the risk of fire.

NHTSA says the “stop sale” is being issued as of today's filing, in accordance with federal regulations, for affected unsold vehicles at dealers and vehicle processing centers.

The NHTSA says there are no confirmed fires, crashes or injuries related to this condition in the U.S.

Automakers are still working on a permanent repair. In the meantime,  Hyundai dealers will inspect the tow hitch module and remove the fuse, as necessary. Unfortunately, there's no interim repair for Kia vehicles.

When a repair is available, all owners of vehicles potentially equipped with affected trailer hitch wiring harnesses will be notified by mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Hyundai or Kia dealer.

Vehicle owners can visit NHTSA.gov/recalls and enter their 17-digit vehicle identification number to see if their vehicle is under recall. Owners can also download NHTSA’s SaferCar app for Apple or Android. Enter the vehicle, tires, car seat, or other vehicle equipment, and the app will push a notification if a recall is issued.
