Good Housekeeping’s Best Family Cars Of 2026

Written by CarPro | Jan 6, 2026 10:08:55 PM

Choosing a family vehicle isn’t just about horsepower or badges — it’s about safety, comfort, versatility and everyday practicality. For the 2026 model year, Good Housekeeping teamed up with automotive experts and real families to test a broad range of cars, SUVs, trucks and EVs across categories that matter most to parents, caregivers and road-trip planners. The result is Good Housekeeping's Best Family Cars of 2026 Awards, a group of winners that collectively reflect how diverse today’s family needs can be — from compact sedans that make errands easier to three-row SUVs that still handle like a daily driver.  First, the winners, the scroll down for Car Pro Show host Jerry Reynolds' thoughts on this year's awardees.

Good Housekeeping's Best Family Cars of 2026

  • Best Sedan — Honda Accord
For families that don’t require three rows but still want generous space and sensible performance, the Honda Accord once again stands out in Good Housekeeping's annual list. Good Housekeeping says its roomy rear seats and capacious trunk make it a compelling choice for daily routines and weekend getaways alike. Accord’s balance of comfort, fuel efficiency and ease of maneuvering makes it especially attractive for suburban driving and urban parking alike. Testers noted that the Accord’s intuitive tech interface and solid fuel economy — notably in hybrid trims — make it well-rounded daily transportation.
  • Best Compact SUV — Volkswagen Tiguan
Stepping up in size without the bulk of larger SUVs,  Good Housekeeping says the VW Tiguan proves that compact crossovers can still serve family life well. With seating for five, a comfortable ride and clever storage solutions, it’s a natural choice for those who want SUV versatility with sedan-like drivability. Evaluators praised its composed handling and roomy cabin, as well as the available all-wheel-drive system for confidence in varying weather or light off-pavement conditions.
  • Best Midsize SUV — Hyundai Palisade
The Hyundai Palisade, one of Car Pro Show host Jerry Reynolds' most recommended midsize SUVS, continues to shine as a three-row SUV.  Good Housekeeping says it hits many of the sweet spots for families: space, comfort, technology and value. Its flexible interior accommodates car seats and passengers with ease, and while third-row legroom isn’t class-leading, Palisade’s overall package appeals to growing families who want premium touches without premium pricing. Its smooth V-6 power and easy-to-use infotainment underscore its broad appeal.
  • Best Large SUV — Volvo XC90
For those needing substantial interior room and upscale refinement, the Volvo XC90 earns a top spot. With a three-row layout that prioritizes safety and Nordic design sensibilities, Good Housekeeping says the XC90 balances generous passenger space with thoughtful amenities. Its reputation for safety technology — a historic strength of the Volvo brand — and its composed road manners make it one of the more appealing options in the full-size SUV segment.
  • Best EV — Tesla Model Y
Electric vehicles are increasingly viable family haulers, and Good Housekeeping says the Tesla Model Y represents one of the most accessible all-electric options on the market. With a useful driving range, practical cargo area and SUV-like seating position, it blends EV efficiency with everyday utility. Good Housekeeping suggests that families who prioritize lower operating costs and a growing charging network will find the Model Y’s strengths align with their needs, even if its minimalist interior isn’t for everyone.
  • Best Luxury EV — Lucid Gravity
At the higher end of the electric spectrum, the Lucid Gravity earns Good Housekeeping's recognition as Best Luxury EV for 2026. Good Housekeeping cites its spacious cabin, strong performance, and driving range that undercuts the range anxiety often associated with EV adoption. Its upscale touches and ample interior space make it a compelling choice for families who want cutting-edge electric performance without sacrificing comfort or utility.
  • Best Truck — Ford Maverick
Not every family’s first thought is a truck, but Good Housekeeping says the Ford Maverick shows how pickup practicality can dovetail with everyday family life. Its compact footprint makes it easier to park than traditional full-size trucks, while its bed and payload capacity add flexibility for hauling bikes, landscaping materials or weekend gear. With a range of powertrain options and competitive pricing, the Maverick brings utility without the intimidation factor of larger pickups.

Car Pro Show Host Jerry Reynolds:

"While I don't ever agree with every list put out, I do agree with much of this one.  I can't say I believe the VW Tiguan is the best compact SUV, it is much improved. The Ford Maverick is a wonderful truck, but it is the best truck?  Not to me with the amazing selection of half-ton trucks out there today. Large SUVs is another very competitive segment, especially with the new Expedition/Navigator, the Sequoia, Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade/Suburban, even the new Armada.  So would I have picked the Volvo XC90?  No although it is a great SUV.  So bottom line, take the information with a grain of salt like you should every "best of" list when it comes to cars."

How Winners Were Selected
Good Housekeeping says its evaluation blends professional test data with real-world feedback from families who live with these vehicles day-to-day. Safety, comfort, cargo space, technology, driver assistance and overall value were all weighed in, creating a set of winners that reflect both objective performance and subjective family use.
