GM’s Super Cruise Logs One Billion Miles

GM is marking what it calls a major milestone in its journey from today’s advanced driver assistance to future autonomous capabilities. As of last week,  GM says its customers have driven one billion hands-free Super Cruise miles. Super Cruise is GM's driver assistance technology.  To put it in perspective, GM says the miles logged equals nearly 2,100 trips to the moon and back.

The automaker credits nearly 750,000 Super Cruise-enabled vehicles across 23 models in North America as contributing to the achievement.  It's not just about the mileage logged itself, but the large-scale, real-world learning in various driving conditions that GM says is helping accelerate its autonomous roadmap.

"This 1 billion miles driven hands-free by our customers is just the start," said Rashed Haq, VP of Vehicle Autonomy. “Super Cruise is the cornerstone of GM’s autonomous roadmap, from today’s hands-free features to eyes-off, starting with the Escalade IQ in 2028. That, combined with more than a century of manufacturing expertise, puts GM at the forefront to bring automated driving to millions of retail customers at all price points."

Super Cruise is available on a broad range of GM vehicles including those with most accessible price points including the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt.

GM Super Cruise Stats

Here are a few stats shared by the automaker:

  • In the last 12 months, GM customers used Super Cruise for 7.1 million hours across 28.7 million trips.
  • In the past year alone, drivers logged nearly half a billion Super Cruise-engaged miles — well over a million miles per day.
  • On average, when Super Cruise is engaged, customers spend roughly 24 minutes hands-free per trip.
  • Over 50% of Super Cruise drivers use the technology on a weekly basis; nearly 85% engage Super Cruise at least once a month.

GM says over the past year its Super Cruise equipped vehicle population grew about 70%, and daily Super Cruise users grew roughly 80%. The automaker says with consistent Super Cruise usage comes strong subscription performance and renewals. The automaker reports that Super Cruise subscriptions are on pace to exceed 850,000 by the end of the year, and cites an attach rate post 3-year pre-paid subscription remaining in the 30-40% range.

The diverse real-world data provided and usage growth all help Super Cruise continually adapt and improve, which GM says helps continuously improve its models and lays the groundwork for future autonomous features.

GM says with every real-world, hands-free mile, GM:

  • Enhances the robustness of current Super Cruise features
  • Informs the design and validation of next-generation autonomous capabilities
  • And strengthens GM’s integrated software and services platform, anchored by OnStar.

Next-Generation Eyes-Off Testing

GM says last month it started supervised public-road testing of its next-generation system. This testing is taking place on limited access highways in California and Michigan. The test fleet will eventually include more than 200 development vehicles that will gradually enter live traffic with a trained test driver at the wheel ready to take control at any time.

GM says it plans to launch eyes-off driving, beginning with highways, on the Cadillac ESCALADE IQ in 2028.
