Finally: A New Jaguar And This One With 1,015 Horsepower

Jaguar’s next chapter has arrived, and it comes with enough power to make a rather emphatic introduction. The British automaker unveiled its new Type 01 electric four-door grand tourer in New York last week, presenting a dramatically styled luxury car that it says will establish the direction for a new generation of Jaguars. According to Jaguar, the vehicle is designed, engineered and built in the United Kingdom, with orders opening in early 2027 and the first customer deliveries anticipated in the second half of that year.

The starting price is $130,500, and the performance figures are equally attention-getting. Jaguar says the Type 01’s three-motor electric powertrain produces up to 1,015 horsepower and 1,007 pound-feet of torque, with acceleration from zero to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds. Its 118-kilowatt-hour usable battery supports an estimated range of up to 400 miles with 21-inch wheels. Those are manufacturer estimates, rather than a final EPA rating. Jaguar also says compatible 350-kilowatt DC charging can add up to 200 miles of range in as little as 13 minutes.

Visually, the Type 01 emphasizes a long hood, low roofline and sleek profile, proportions Jaguar connects to classics such as the E-Type and XJS. Managing Director Rawdon Glover describes the new car as the foundation for Jaguar’s transformation, with design and engineering working together to create a desirable luxury grand tourer. Its dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture was developed specifically for the company’s new electric vehicles, giving designers greater freedom to shape the car’s proportions and passenger environment.

The details reinforce that approach. Standard wheels measure 23 inches, while 21-inch wheels are available. A glassless tailgate gives the rear an unusually solid appearance, and aerodynamic features include active front vanes and a deployable rear spoiler. Jaguar reports a drag coefficient of 0.23, calling this its most aerodynamic car. In other words, the styling has work to do beyond getting people to stop and stare.

Inside, Jaguar has organized the cabin around a central spine that runs its full length, creating four individual seating spaces. Brass-inspired finishes repeat along the doors, while the interior’s colors and textures draw inspiration from travertine stone and artisan textiles. According to Jaguar’s interior design announcement, a low driving position is intended to surround the driver, and concealed compartments help preserve the cabin’s clean appearance. A digital ClearSight rearview display sits centrally at the base of the windshield, positioned at approximately the same height as the exterior mirrors.

Jaguar says preserving its driving character required looking backward before moving forward. During development, engineers drove historic models including the XK120, E-Type, XJS, XJ Series I and V12-powered XJ Coupe. The purpose was to identify the combination of accessible performance, comfort and refinement that distinguished those vehicles, then apply those qualities to the electric grand tourer. The company’s engineering announcement described air suspension and active dampers working together to balance ride comfort with responsive handling. That is a meaningful ambition: horsepower can grab a headline, but how a luxury car treats its occupants matters on every mile.

Even the name explains Jaguar’s intentions. The company says “Type” acknowledges its historic models, the zero represents zero tailpipe emissions, and the one identifies the first vehicle in this new generation. Whether the Type 01 delivers the promised blend of performance, comfort and design will become clearer when customers begin driving it. For now, Jaguar has supplied the specifications, the styling and a very expensive invitation to its next chapter.
