Honors keep coming for Volkswagen's first all-electric vehicle the ID.4 SUV. It's most recently been named a TOP SAFETY PICK+ from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It's the highest safety award given by the IIHS and it's based on a number of factors including crash test ratings, headlights and safety technology.

TOP SAFETY PICK+

To qualify for the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, vehicles must earn good ratings in all six IIHS crashworthiness evaluations, including the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests.

Headlights

Headlights matter, too. The ID.4's standard LED reflector headlights earn an acceptable rating, while the optional curve-adaptive LED projectors earn a good rating.

Crash Prevention Systems

The ID.4's crash prevention systems also meet the requirements for the top award. Vehicles must also be available with a front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations and come with good or acceptable headlights across all trim levels.  The ID.4's standard front crash prevention system earns a superior rating in the vehicle-to-vehicle evaluation and an advanced rating in the vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluation.  The Front Assist system,  standard on all ID.4 models, receives an superior rating for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and an advanced  rating for vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention.

Additionally, VW says the ID.4 features standard IQ.DRIVE advanced driver assistance with hands-on semi-automated capability.

With its full equipment package, the ID.4 utilizes a front radar, front camera, two rear radars and eight ultrasound sensors to collect data from the surrounding area, enabling Travel Assist (semi-automated driving assistance), Front Assist (Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring), Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Stop & Go, Lane Assist (Lane Keeping System), and Emergency Assist (semi-automated vehicle assistance in a medical emergency). In addition to IQ.DRIVE, the ID.4 includes Dynamic Road Sign Display; Park Distance Control; and Light Assist (High Beam Control for headlights).
