2022 & Newer GM Owners: Gemini Is Coming To Your Car

Ahead of the arrival of its own custom-built AI system later this year, General Motors is bringing Google Gemini to millions of its vehicles.  The roll out begins soon for 2022 and newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC vehicles equipped with Google built-in. Approximately 4 million vehicles are eligible for the software update.

Gemini is an upgrade from the current Google Assistant to what GM calls a smarter, more intuitive AI assistant that continues to improve over time. Gemini supports natural, back-and-forth conversation, instead of voice commands.

“Gemini delivers AI assistance to millions of drivers across every segment and price point for a wide range of everyday needs. That kind of scale is only possible because of the connected vehicle foundation GM has built through OnStar over the past 30 years,” said Tim Twerdahl, Global Vice President of Product Management, General Motors. “Later this year, GM will deliver a more deeply integrated AI experience shaped by OnStar intelligence.”

Texts, Curated Entertainment and Videos

Gemini understands natural language. It can summarize and read your incoming messages and it can also draft, edit, or even translate your outgoing texts all without touching your phone.  You can also tell it which emoji you'd like to use. It also allows you to do things like create playlists that match the scenery, and it can suggest or summarize podcast episodes. You can stream videos while parked. Gemini taps into in-vehicle apps including Amazon Music, Apple Music, Audible, HBO Max, Hulu, Prime Video, Spotify, TuneIn, YouTube, and more.

Conversation Flow

The Gemini in-vehicle assistant can handle tasks in a single conversation flow: 

• Say: “Hey Google, take me to the nearest post office. Oh, and add a stop for some good coffee along the way.”
• Refine it with a follow up: “I'm suddenly craving barbecue. Are there any good spots along my route? Let’s say, less than a mile detour.”
• Or shift gears mid-flow: “Play something calming.”

Learn and brainstorm

Need someone to talk to? Gemini is there for you to help you brainstorm and plan.

• Plan a trip and learn about the destination: “Can you help us brainstorm ideas for a family holiday? Somewhere warm, full of adventure, without a long flight.”
• Prep for important conversations: “I need to have a conversation with my boss about a new promotion. How do I go about this?”

Smarter route planning for commercial drivers

Other benefits include smarter route planning for commercial drivers. 

• Plan a more efficient day: “I have three stops to make today and need to finish my day with at least half a tank. Can you help me find the least expensive fuel along my route?”
• Find trailer-friendly parking: “Where is the best trailer friendly parking near me?

Availability

The Gemini update will be delivered over several months. When the upgrade is ready for a specific vehicle,  customers will see a message on their infotainment screen. To use Gemini, customers must be:

• Connected to OnStar
• Signed into the Google Play Store
• Using US English as your assistant language
• Opted in to Gemini

The update will expand to additional GM markets and support more languages over time.
